1 00:00:00,560 --> 00:00:08,980 Hi everybody, it's Natalia. Today, and in my videos this week, I am going to be talking about a very important topic 2 00:00:08,980 --> 00:00:14,500 and something that's very timely, and that is what's going on in the United States right now. 3 00:00:15,000 --> 00:00:22,519 You may have seen videos or news coverage of the protests that have been happening all around the United States and the world, 4 00:00:22,519 --> 00:00:27,899 and I think it's really important to talk about what that's all about. So, let's get started. 5 00:00:27,899 --> 00:00:33,020 To start off with, I think it's important to get a bit of historical context on the Black Lives 6 00:00:33,020 --> 00:00:39,219 Matter movement itself in the United States. It was originally started back in 2013, and it was 7 00:00:39,219 --> 00:00:47,119 a response to police brutality and shootings in the United States. So in terms of what Black Lives 8 00:00:47,119 --> 00:00:55,640 Matter protesters stand for, they are fighting for many different things. So they are advocating for 9 00:00:55,640 --> 00:01:04,219 an end to police brutality, an end to excessive policing in Black communities. They want to 10 00:01:04,219 --> 00:01:12,500 hold law enforcement more accountable for their actions, and they also want to fight against 11 00:01:12,500 --> 00:01:19,019 institutional racism. So institutional racism isn't racism that would just happen between two people. 12 00:01:19,019 --> 00:01:25,420 It is racism that's based on a structure, on a system in society. So it's talking about 13 00:01:25,420 --> 00:01:32,819 a set of policies, a set of practices that contribute to a systematic disadvantage of 14 00:01:32,819 --> 00:01:39,799 members of racial groups with less societal power. So a systematic disadvantage against people of 15 00:01:39,799 --> 00:01:44,359 color, and in this case against Black people specifically. They're also fighting against 16 00:01:44,359 --> 00:01:50,180 mass incarceration of Black people in the United States, which refers to the way that many, many 17 00:01:50,180 --> 00:01:56,599 Black people have been put into prisons and jails in the United States. Now that you have some 18 00:01:56,599 --> 00:02:00,579 background about the situation in the United States and the Black Lives Matter movement, 19 00:02:00,819 --> 00:02:08,560 let's talk a bit about what's going on currently. So on May 25th, 2020, this year, George Floyd, 20 00:02:08,560 --> 00:02:16,319 who was an innocent Black man, was murdered by a police officer in Minneapolis, a city in the 21 00:02:16,319 --> 00:02:24,159 United States. The officer who killed him was not originally charged for any crimes and this event 22 00:02:24,159 --> 00:02:32,479 along with many many years in fact centuries of violence and systematic oppression of Black people 23 00:02:32,479 --> 00:02:41,539 in the United States led to protests. So protests that started in Minneapolis, Minnesota where the 24 00:02:41,539 --> 00:02:47,659 murder of George Floyd occurred, but these protests also spread to other cities in the 25 00:02:47,659 --> 00:02:53,280 United States and around the country. And in fact, as of last week, there were protests that occurred 26 00:02:53,280 --> 00:03:00,139 in every single state in the United States. Many of these protests have led to the destruction 27 00:03:00,139 --> 00:03:09,219 of property, both by police officers and by civilians. And in many cities, in fact, police 28 00:03:09,219 --> 00:03:17,580 have shown up with weapons. So those weapons can be tear gas, batons, guns, whether with rubber or 29 00:03:17,580 --> 00:03:25,659 real bullets, for example. And the police showing up with these weapons have also turned a lot of 30 00:03:25,659 --> 00:03:32,379 these protests that were originally peaceful into violent protests by escalating the situation. 31 00:03:32,379 --> 00:03:40,639 um throughout these protests police have arrested many protesters and journalists 32 00:03:40,639 --> 00:03:48,539 as of this first week in june over 10 000 people have been arrested by the police and again that 33 00:03:48,539 --> 00:03:54,000 is protesters and journalists i want to say that this is only a brief overview of what's going on 34 00:03:54,000 --> 00:03:58,780 in the united states and there are a lot of resources out there that you can find online 35 00:03:58,780 --> 00:04:00,680 that talk about what's going on right now. 36 00:04:00,860 --> 00:04:03,740 I am also here to discuss anything by email 37 00:04:03,740 --> 00:04:06,439 if you have any questions or concerns. 38 00:04:07,080 --> 00:04:08,620 But I do think that it's important 39 00:04:08,620 --> 00:04:10,819 that we talk about what's really going on right now 40 00:04:10,819 --> 00:04:11,439 in the world.
