Basketball is played on a rectangular court that is 84 foot long and 50 foot wide. 00:00:14

College and NBA courts are slightly longer at 90 feet. 00:00:21

This part of the court where the game is played is called inbounds. 00:00:26

and everything outside of that is considered out of bounds. 00:00:29

The boundary line around the court is also considered out of bounds 00:00:35

if you step on it or bounce the ball on it. 00:00:38

The out of bounds lines running the length of the court are called the sidelines 00:00:42

and the out of bounds lines running the width of the court is called the baseline. 00:00:46

The line dividing the court in the middle is called the half court line or the mid court line. 00:00:51

This rectangular area between the free throw line and the baseline is called the key or the paint. 00:00:57

Other areas on the court are referred to as the top of the key, the slots, the wings, the corner, the short corner, the block or low post, and the elbow or high post. 00:01:04

These are the two free throw lines. 00:01:24

The free throw line is 15 feet from the basket or backboard and 19 feet from the baseline. 00:01:29

Penalty shots for fouls and violations are attempted at the free throw line without any 00:01:38

These are the 3-point lines. 00:01:45

Any shot made inside of the 3-point line is worth 2 points. 00:01:48

Any shot made outside of the 3-point line is worth 3 points. 00:01:52

The three-point line is 19 feet 9 inches from the basket or backboard. 00:01:57

Three-point shots are more difficult to make because they are a lot farther from the basket. 00:02:03

At the end of each court there is a metal hoop with an inside diameter of 18 inches. 00:02:10

The rim sits 10 feet above the ground on both sides. 00:02:17

A regulation backboard is 72 inches wide and 42 inches tall. 00:02:21

The game is played with different sized basketballs for different age levels. 00:02:27

A size 5 ball is 27.5 inches round or 8.75 in diameter, weighs 15 ounces and is used 00:02:32

by ages 5 to 12. 00:02:39

A size 6 ball is 28.5 inches round or 9.07 inches in diameter, weighs about 20 ounces 00:02:43

and is used by females ages 12 and up and males ages 12 to 14. 00:02:50

When a size 7 ball is 29.5 inches round or 9.39 inches in diameter, weighs 22 ounces 00:02:57

and is used by males 15 and up. 00:03:04

Remember that 18 inch rim diameter? 00:03:07

Well, you can fit almost two of the largest sized basketballs inside the rim. 00:03:09

It's a lot wider than it looks from the court. 00:03:14

Two teams of five players each compete over four quarters or two halves with a longer 00:03:17

rest period in the middle called a halftime. 00:03:23

The objective is for each team to put the ball in their opponent's hoop and score as 00:03:26

many points as possible. 00:03:30

A scored shot is called a field goal and is worth 2 points. 00:03:32

A shot made outside of the 3 point line is worth 3 points. 00:03:38

The team with the highest score at the end wins the game. 00:03:43

If the score is tied at the end, an additional overtime period will be played to determine 00:03:48

a winner. 00:03:52

game cannot end in a tie. Players can move around the court while bouncing the ball. This is called 00:03:53

dribbling. They can also move the ball by throwing or passing it to a teammate. 00:03:59
