Welcome everyone to the Olympic Games. Before we talk about the Winter Games, which are coming up very soon, we're going to learn about the Olympic Games history and what the competitions look like today.
00:00:06
Join me on our journey back in time, starting in 776 BC.
00:00:17
The Olympic Games started in a city called Olympia in Greece, where men competed against one another to see if they were the fastest or strongest.
00:00:22
It simply began as a race, but evolved into more competitions, including other countries as well.
00:00:33
Unfortunately, the Games stopped in the year AD 393.
00:00:39
In 1896, the Games were reintroduced to the world, as the first modern Olympic Games took place in Greece once again.
00:00:45
Fourteen countries competed to find out who was faster, higher, and stronger than everyone else.
00:00:53
This was a great way to bring people from all over the world together for friendly competition and to encourage one another to be better athletes.
00:00:58
This video depicts the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens, the birthplace of the Olympics.
00:01:08
Here you can see the entire arena and all 14 countries' athletes in attendance.
00:01:15
This event is the high jump, which looks a little different from the event we know today.
00:01:21
The men would line up and do their best from a standing position to jump higher than everyone else until the winner was selected.
00:01:27
The Olympics has changed a lot, as you can see.
00:01:34
Now, women not only have their own events, but can sometimes compete in partnership with their male teammates as well.
00:01:37
There is also a Paralympics, which was started in 1960 and ever since has been held at the same time as the Olympics.
00:01:43
people from all walks of life and with differently abled bodies were able to compete in honor of
00:01:50
their countries. Because of COVID-19, the 2020 Summer Olympic Games were postponed until this
00:01:56
last summer. Some of the sports countries could choose to compete in were gymnastics, basketball,
00:02:03
volleyball, tennis, and a new one this year, surfing. This upcoming February, we will be
00:02:10
having the 2022 Winter Olympics where you can root on your favorite athletes as they compete in
00:02:18
figure skating, snowboarding, skiing, and more. Mark your calendars for February 4th.
00:02:23
You don't want to miss it.
