Hello, my name is Antonio de Teres Carrion. I was a Spanish composer and I am considered one of the main zarzuelas authors of the Spanish Baroque. I was born on June 18, 1673 in Arta, located in Mallorca, Spain.
00:00:00
I began my career as a choir boy in the Royal Chapel, studying the Cero with Manuel de Sobas Gel. In 1720, I was recognized as one of the best skilled instrumentalists in the Royal Chapel, as well as my skill as a composer.
00:00:15
The documentation of the Royal Chapel clarifies that I was a composer for it from 1690.
00:00:33
In case you don't believe me, in 1696 I was in charge of the composition of the Janficos
00:00:40
for the celebration of the Corpus and Lamentaciones para la Semana Santa.
00:00:47
In 1734, after a disaster fire in the Royal Palace that destroyed all musical composition,
00:00:52
I was one of the composers that had to rebuild the collection and compose new music to replace
00:00:57
what had been lost.
00:01:03
Antonio de Litteres, José Negra and José de Torres
00:01:08
were asked to rebuild and compose a new musical piece
00:01:11
like the one that was destroyed in the fire of the Royal Palace of Madrid
00:01:14
on the 24th of December of 1734.
00:01:17
Antonio de Litteres, José Negra and José de Torres, come here, please.
00:01:23
What is happening, sir?
00:01:27
You know that the Royal Palace has been burned after a fire
00:01:28
last Friday, the 24th of December, right?
00:01:31
Of course, we lived and worked there.
00:01:34
Oh, that's true, whatever
00:01:36
You have to rebuild and compose a new musical piece
00:01:38
Like the one you worked with the last time
00:01:41
Before it was burned the other day, ok?
00:01:43
Perfect, as the chapel director I am
00:01:46
I will inform you as soon as we finish it
00:01:48
Ok, thank you very much, José de Torres
00:01:50
Now I have to go, good luck
00:01:52
Bye
00:01:54
Goodbye
00:01:55
Oh my god, I have been working on that music piece for months
00:01:56
And now it has burned and I have to compose it again?
00:02:00
I can't believe it
00:02:03
you mean we have to compose it again right oh yeah yeah as you say come on we should start
00:02:04
as soon as possible if we want to finish it we have such long work to do
00:02:11
yes we want to start um tomorrow what of course not we are starting now um okay as you say
00:02:15
i'm going to kill whoever has burned the royal palace another of my activities consisted of
00:02:22
composing for various Carzuelas and other works such as Los Elementos, which nowadays is described
00:02:29
as an italian style harmonic opera whose score is preserved with the other forms of works.
00:02:35
In the early years of the 18th century, I published different works by the José Torres
00:02:42
Press, many of them cantatas or joined by members of the aristocracy. The elements, for example,
00:02:47
are dedicated to the Duques de Medina de las Torres. I also composed music for zarfelas that
00:02:54
were performed outside the court in different theatres of Madrid, benefiting from the new
00:03:00
bourbon policy that allowed the musicians of the Royal Chapel to carry out activities other than
00:03:07
those of the court. Despite my success, my importance as a royal musician declined progressively
00:03:12
with the arrival of the new Italian composers protected by the Queen.
00:03:18
I was married twice, the first time to Manuela Sánchez
00:03:24
and the second time to Luisa de Montalvo.
00:03:27
I had four children and several of them became musicians of the Royal Chapel,
00:03:30
such as José Líteres Sánchez, cellist of the Royal Chapel,
00:03:35
the result of my first marriage to Manuela Sánchez de Aguilar.
00:03:38
From my second marriage to Luisa Benita Montalvo,
00:03:44
Antenarii Teres Montalvo was born, who became organist of the royal chapel.
00:03:47
He made different types of compositions, zartuelas, operas, religious and secular music.
00:03:52
Ones of the music works are Celos no guardan respeto, which is a zarzuela with a book of
00:03:58
Antonio de Zamora, Los elementos, which is an opera, is an italian style harmonic opera,
00:04:04
A del rústico pastor, which is religious music, sang to the kings,
00:04:10
and Estaba fili hermosa, which is secular music, and was one of the ten human cantatas.
00:04:15
Los elementos is one of the most important and relevant compositions of Antonio de Litteres,
00:04:22
and it is the first foray of the chamber musical theatre into the magnificent world of the Hispanic musical Baroque.
00:04:27
This opera was composed in Madrid to celebrate the anniversary of the Duchess of Medina de la Torre.
00:04:33
It transmits a message that, in a political key, could also be interpreted as the light of Felipe V of Bourbon,
00:04:37
which would bring against Archduke Carlos of Austria in the war of succession that was then being fought in Spain.
00:04:45
It is an Italian-style harmonic opera in which the best tradition of Hispanic verse converges
00:04:54
with Italian novelist in music materialized in the use of violins and the alternation of recitatives and arias.
00:05:00
These features were understood as synonymous with modernity.
