Today, we're going to study reported speech, and we are going to do so by means of the
00:00:00
movie Get Out, written and directed by Jordan Peele.
00:00:06
What I have done, and what you guys will be seeing throughout this presentation, is a
00:00:13
series of quotes from the movie, statements, questions, commands, that I have taken out
00:00:18
of the script, and I have transcripted into the PowerPoint presentation.
00:00:24
I'm going to give you the direct speech quote.
00:00:29
I will then highlight the changes that we need to make to the sentence.
00:00:33
And finally, you will get the reported speech sentence.
00:00:37
And of course, before we begin, remember that the changes that we need to apply to a reported
00:00:41
speech type of sentence coming from a direct speech type of sentence are tenses, pronouns,
00:00:46
and time and place references.
00:00:52
In this first slide that you guys are seeing up on the screen,
00:00:54
Officer Ryan says, Sir, can I see your license, please?
00:00:59
The highlight changes that you're seeing, can in red being the tense and I and your in blue being the pronouns,
00:01:04
are the ones that we need to transform, that we need to change in order for us to go from the direct speech quote to the reported speech sentence.
00:01:10
Of course, the sentence would be Officer Ryan asked if he could see his license.
00:01:18
when we report a question remember you can have a yes or no type of question or a wh type of
00:01:23
question if it is a yes or no type of question you follow the reporting verb in this in this case
00:01:30
ask by if and not that as we would do in regular reported speech sentences
00:01:36
the following one rose he wasn't driving in here the changes that you need to apply
00:01:42
are of course to he wasn't driving wasn't driving being the tense that you can see in red
00:01:48
the reported pitch quote would be something like this rose explained that he hadn't been driving
00:01:55
from the past simple we go back we revert to the past perfect he hadn't been driving
00:02:03
in this case past continuous therefore past perfect continues next one reads rose you don't
00:02:10
have to give him your ID. Changes that we need to make are you and your being the
00:02:18
pronouns and then don't have being the tense and the result of course would be
00:02:24
Rose argued that he didn't have to give him his ID. In this case he and his being
00:02:29
the pronouns and then didn't have being the tense change from the direct
00:02:37
speech sentence to the reported speech sentence. The following one police
00:02:42
officer is everything all right Ryan that is a yes or no question so again what we need to follow
00:02:48
uh the reporting verb with is the particle if and the changes that we need to apply uh are is and
00:02:55
then if if that sentence had um or were to contain the word now then now would be another thing
00:03:03
another um place reference time reference in this case that we would need to change the sentence
00:03:09
will be something like this the police officer asked ryan if everything was all right then
00:03:14
is present tense changes of course to past tense was and then now changes to then officer ryan
00:03:19
get this headlight fix we have throughout this presentation seen statements and uh questions
00:03:29
and this now is a command an imperative sentence get this headlight fixed the changes that we need
00:03:35
apply being this a command again an imperative sentence are extremely easy the verb get plus
00:03:42
this in this case being a pronoun officer ryan warned them to get that headlight fix
00:03:50
remember in commands in imperative sentences the only thing you have to do is to precede the verb
00:03:57
untouched by two get this satellite fix again uh becomes officer ryan warned them to get that
00:04:02
headlight fix this of course changes to that that is the end of this presentation i hope uh it serves
00:04:11
you as good practice and review and revision uh for reported speech and for any upcoming exams
00:04:18
that you might have um i'll be seeing you guys in the next video as usual be safe and take care
