A thousand years ago, there were only a third of a billion people. 00:00:07

Now there's seven billion of us. 00:00:14
How did we grow so much so fast? 00:00:16

The fuller the glass gets, the more people there are. 00:00:22
Water drips in as people are born. 00:00:25
Water drips out as people die. 00:00:28
Okay, here's the entire world. 00:00:31
Now let's go back a thousand years. 00:00:34
The Americas are nearly empty. 00:00:39
Europe and Africa have less than 100 million people between them. 00:00:42
And just like today, most people live in China, India, and the rest of Asia. 00:00:45
For centuries, things stay pretty much the same. 00:00:51
Births are canceled out by deaths. 00:00:55
Women are having lots of babies, but most babies die before they grow up and have families of their own. 00:00:58
We don't reach 1 billion until 1804. 00:01:04

Better medicine and better agriculture are starting to slow the leak from the bottom of the glass. 00:01:14

The UN says we'll level out at 10 billion by the end of the century. 00:01:49
So as we continue to grow from 7 billion, 00:01:54
the question is, can the world hold that many people? 00:01:57

It all depends on how well we manage our food, water, and energy. 00:02:04
