Spanish Inquisition founder, unifying force of Spain, and defender of the Catholic faith, 00:00:00
here are five facts about Isabella of Castile. 00:00:05
Fact number one, she helped discover America. 00:00:09
It was with Isabella's backing that Christopher Columbus was able to afford his voyage to the New World. 00:00:19
Not only did this bring wealth to Spain, but the lands discovered were now owned by Castile. 00:00:24
When the Native Americans were brought back as slaves, Isabella demanded they be set free. 00:00:29
Fact number two. She created the Spanish Inquisition. Isabella and her husband, Ferdinand II, 00:00:33
established the Spanish Inquisition to ensure that Jews and Muslims who had converted to 00:00:40
Christianity were keeping to their new faith. She also commanded that the Jews and Muslims in Spain 00:00:44
that refused to convert to Christianity were exiled. Whether she purposely intended to influence 00:00:50
the famous Monty Python sketch or not is still up for debate. Fact number three. She was the first 00:00:55
woman on a U.S. coin. In 1893, 400 years after Columbus's fateful voyage, a coin was issued 00:01:00
in the United States that featured Isabella's image. That same year, she also became the 00:01:07
first woman featured on a commemorative U.S. postage stamp when she was featured alongside 00:01:11
Columbus on the 8-cent stamp. Fact number four, she had a famous daughter. Of her five 00:01:16
children, only three outlived Isabella, one of which was Joanna, nicknamed Joanna the 00:01:22
mad for her mental instability. Another daughter, Catherine of Aragon, went on to become the 00:01:27
first wife of Henry VIII, making Isabella the grandmother of Mary I of England. 00:01:32
Fact 5. She was a mature student. Isabella championed education, making sure both her 00:01:39
sons and daughters received a full education. She also set up many educational institutions 00:01:44
and amassed a large art collection. Widely read, Isabella continued her own studies well 00:01:49
into adulthood and learned Latin when she was 35 years old. But that's not that impressive, 00:01:54
I can speak it and I'm only 24. Ergo sum loquentis ineptus. 00:01:59
And there you have it, five facts on the famous Spanish queen Isabella of Castile. I hope 00:02:05
