hello friends welcome to new happy learning video today we're going to learn about the 00:00:05
first and most important of human civilizations today we're going to learn about Mesopotamia the 00:00:15
word Mesopotamia means between two rivers in Greek so this civilization was named because 00:00:24
it's situated between two rivers tigris and euphrates within these fertile lands the first 00:00:32
ever city states were born four thousand years before christ the most important cities were 00:00:41
uruk and lagash these city states were independent from each other 00:00:49
they were surrounded by a great wall to protect themselves the ziggurat a temple where priests 00:00:56
lived was built in the center of the city here they controlled trade agriculture and taxes 00:01:05
the supreme priest had the city's political and religious power agricultural fields spread across 00:01:15
these cities which were traversed by irrigation channels that used the river's water to water 00:01:25
cultivations and animals would drink most of the city's citizens were farmers and shepherds 00:01:31
but there were also artisans that sold their own products at markets because of their well-being 00:01:40
both cities began to grow but so did the conflicts between them due to the control of land 00:01:49
These battles arose military leaders that little by little turned into monarchs, into kings. 00:01:56
Between the years 3000 and 1000 BC Mesopotamian lands were conquered by various towns or cities. 00:02:09
The first one was the Arcadian Empire, then the Babylonian Empire, 00:02:18
followed by the Assyrian Empire, and finally the Persian Empire. 00:02:24
So, we've got to know part of Mesopotamia's history, 00:02:31
but do you know why it has been such an important civilization for humanity? 00:02:35
Well, there are many reasons, but the first one is because Mesopotamia was where around 3500 BC 00:02:41
the first written language was found. 00:02:49
At first, it was composed by simple drawings called pictograms. 00:02:52
Look at these examples. 00:02:57
Over time, these drawings were simplified and started to transform into symbols, 00:02:59
which is what we know today as cuneiform writing. 00:03:11
As you can see, this writing was made with a wooden punch over clay boards. 00:03:15
Another great contribution Mesopotamia made was its art. 00:03:23
art. They created the Ark and Vault that helped them construct magnificent temples and palaces. 00:03:30
To decorate the walls and doors within these temples and palaces, they used paintings like 00:03:43
this one where the King Ashurbanipal is hunting lions. 00:03:49
By the way, before we say goodbye, do you know what country Mesopotamia is today? 00:03:57
Well, it's Iraq! 00:04:03
You can see it here! 00:04:06
