Now, remember, a modal verb accompanies a main verb and it gives us extra information.
00:00:04
It tells us something about that main verb.
00:00:11
The first one is must.
00:00:15
Now, must is a modal verb of obligation.
00:00:18
It's for laws and self-imposed obligation.
00:00:21
something you are telling yourself you must do so for example at the moment we must stay at home
00:00:26
we must stay at home it's the law now imagine you have an exam tomorrow you don't but imagine
00:00:36
you want to get a good mark so you say I must study because you want to pass I must study
00:00:43
The next one is have to. Now, have to is for obligation as well, but it's what we call external obligation.
00:00:53
Somebody else is telling us we have to do it. We probably don't want to, but we have to.
00:01:03
For example, your mum says you have to tidy your bedroom. You have to tidy your bedroom.
00:01:12
The next one is should or ought to.
00:01:18
Should or ought to.
00:01:24
And this is for advice or mild obligation.
00:01:26
So, for example, you should go to bed because you are tired.
00:01:31
Or, we all ought to eat more healthily.
00:01:38
It's a good idea.
00:01:43
