Hi guys, welcome back to another quick lesson with Anji.
00:00:01
Today we're going to be talking about the food chain.
00:00:14
So let's get started.
00:00:17
All living things obtain food in different ways.
00:00:19
First, let's talk about our producer in the food chain.
00:00:24
Producers make their own food through a process called photosynthesis.
00:00:29
So our producer in our food chain here is grass.
00:00:35
And after our producer comes our primary consumer.
00:00:41
Primary consumers, such as our little grasshopper here, eat plants and algae.
00:00:46
Can you think of another primary consumer?
00:00:54
What about a fish?
00:00:59
A fish is also a primary consumer because fish eat algae.
00:01:02
And because fish and grasshoppers only eat plants, that makes them vegetarians.
00:01:08
So our primary consumers are vegetarians.
00:01:16
So let's move on.
00:01:22
After our primary consumer comes our secondary consumer.
00:01:24
And of course, our secondary consumer here, our little bird, eats the primary consumers.
00:01:28
So that makes them carnivores.
00:01:36
After our secondary consumer comes our tertiary consumer.
00:01:41
And in this case, it's a snake, a rattlesnake.
00:01:46
And our rattlesnakes are also carnivores because they eat our secondary consumer, which is our little bird.
00:01:49
Now, after our tertiary consumer, we come to our apex predator.
00:01:59
An apex predator is an animal that has no natural enemies.
00:02:07
That means that is an animal that is not going to get eaten by another animal.
00:02:13
In our food chain here, it is a lynx.
00:02:19
The lynx does not have any natural enemies.
00:02:23
There are no other animals that are going to come and eat a lynx.
00:02:26
Can you think of another apex predator?
00:02:30
What about an alligator?
00:02:36
There are no other different types of animals that are going to come and try to eat a huge alligator.
00:02:39
So an alligator is also an apex predator.
00:02:45
so now you might be asking Anji what comes after our apex predator well the chain then continues
00:02:48
on to our decomposers and decomposers eat the remains of other living things after they die
00:02:57
so after our apex predator or our tertiary predator dies it then lays on the ground in the
00:03:06
forest or in the meadow, in the ocean, and it stays there while mushrooms or other fungi come
00:03:15
and break down their remains. And after all the remains are broken down, it then gives life
00:03:24
to plants like flowers and algae so that they can grow and they can keep the chain going.
