In this video we're going to look at ancient history. 00:00:03
Several important civilizations developed during ancient history. 00:00:08
One of the most important was the Roman civilization about 2,000 years ago. 00:00:14
Most Roman cities had a large square in the center called a forum. 00:00:23
It was surrounded by the most important buildings in the city. 00:00:29
Look how many people there are. 00:00:34
Rich people lived in family houses called a domus. 00:00:40
These surrounded a courtyard. 00:00:45
Light entered through the courtyard and rainwater was collected there. 00:00:48
Some rich Romans also had country houses called villas. 00:01:00
Here they grew crops and kept animals. 00:01:05
However, poor people lived in apartment buildings called insula. 00:01:08
They were crowded together, many people in small space. 00:01:23
Rich people had slaves. 00:01:36
Slaves were servants with no rights. 00:01:40
They could be bought or sold. 00:01:44
Romans built many roads made of stone to connect their cities. 00:01:54
Romans travelled on foot, by horse or by cart. 00:01:59
The Romans were wonderful builders. 00:02:05
They built theatres for entertainment. 00:02:15
This one has no roof as you can see. 00:02:18
They also built amphitheatres for gladiator fights. 00:02:25
These were very popular in Roman times. 00:02:29
They had chariot races in Roman circuses. 00:02:33
These were very exciting. The Romans built temples. Very often the temples would be around 00:02:42
the forum in the city centre. Here is a Roman aqueduct. These were used to carry water into 00:02:55
the cities. Roman baths. Roman baths were where people went to keep clean. They would 00:03:12
go every day to wash, but also to meet their friends. The Romans spoke Latin. Here you 00:03:24
can see the Latin alphabet. It looks a little bit different to our alphabet, but many languages 00:03:37
come from Latin. For example, French, Italian and Spanish. Here are some Latin words. Can 00:03:47
Can you see any that you recognise? 00:03:57
I bet you can. 00:04:01
