Invisible Women in History: Rosalind Franklin

Rosalind was born in a powerful and wealthy family in Great Britain in 1920. 00:00:01

Her parents always wanted the best for her, and she moved from one school to another following 00:00:08

the steps of the most famous scientists from all over the world. 00:00:13

After her studies, she dedicated most of her life researching in the genetical world. 00:00:17

She died at the young age of 37 due to ovarian cancer. 00:00:22

When she finished her studies, Rosalind went to King's College in London, where she studied 00:00:27

with Maurice Wilkins the molecular structure of DNA. 00:00:32

They discovered two types of DNA. 00:00:36

As Rosalind didn't get on well with Maurice, Rosalind studied DNA type A, while Maurice 00:00:38

researched on DNA type B. 00:00:44

After a few months, Rosalind took the famous Photograph 51, in which we can appreciate 00:00:47

the double helix of DNA, but from another point of view. 00:00:52

And Rosalind kept it in a drawer. 00:00:56

When Maurice saw this, he said, 00:01:00

My jaw fell open and my paws began to raise. 00:01:03

Wilkins stole that image and worked with James Watson, who was working on his own DNA model 00:01:07

with Francis Crick at Cambridge University, and obtained all the recognition and awards. 00:01:13

Wilkins with his colleague Francis Crick and James Watson received a Nobel Prize. 00:01:20

The discovery was published in several scientific magazines. 00:01:29

They even wrote a book about it. 00:01:33

Rosalind was very invisible and never recognized as a woman who discovered the structure of DNA. 00:01:35

She never got a degree because it wasn't allowed for women to study, but they didn't get a degree. 00:01:42

The Second World War was in its audit point when she was studying, 00:01:48

so she stopped studying and went with her cousin, 00:01:53

and they both offered as volunteers to help the people while they were in air attacks. 00:01:56

Morris Wilkin wrote a book in which she talked very bad about Rosalind Franklin. 00:02:03

She also made research in the field of viruses and discovered its structure. 00:02:12

all that is necessary for faith is the belief that by doing our best we shall come nearer to success 00:02:23

and that success in our aims is worth attaining so basically what she's saying is to go for our 00:02:30
