So, Beverley, what made you want to be a translator?
00:00:05
Well, I became curious about languages
00:00:09
because my mum used to tell me about my grandfather,
00:00:13
who I'd never met, but he was a French speaker
00:00:16
because he was brought up in the French-speaking part of Canada.
00:00:19
And so I think that sort of piqued my curiosity.
00:00:24
And then at school, I found languages easy.
00:00:29
but I didn't want to teach.
00:00:31
And that seemed to be the obvious thing that you'd go into.
00:00:36
I wanted to use my languages to do something.
00:00:39
So I chose, deliberately chose a course which was more practical, I thought,
00:00:42
because they included translation and interpreting
00:00:49
and also the history, politics and sociology of the countries that you were studying.
00:00:52
Could you explain the difference between translating and interpreting?
00:00:58
Yes, translating is written,
00:01:03
so you're translating from something that you can see on a piece of paper.
00:01:07
And interpreting is where you're translating the spoken word,
00:01:12
so you're speaking.
00:01:17
So what languages did you study?
00:01:19
So I studied French and Spanish at university
00:01:21
and then I moved to Spain when I finished
00:01:24
and it was very difficult to get a job that wasn't teaching English.
00:01:29
So I went back to the UK,
00:01:34
did a diploma in specialised and technical translation
00:01:37
and then decided that I would never, ever become a translator
00:01:39
because it was too boring.
00:01:43
But eventually, after teaching for 17 years,
00:01:47
I decided I spent two years unemployed and then I started working in an engineering company
00:01:51
and I was doing translation work basically and I thought well I could do this myself
00:02:00
and decided to get to stop become a freelance translator and because I enjoyed the freedom
00:02:07
it gave me and the fact that I could work anywhere basically as long as I've got an
00:02:16
internet connection. So do you prefer translating to interpreting? I prefer
00:02:20
translating because you've got time to think and you've got time to play around
00:02:26
with the sentences and improve the finished product whereas interpreting
00:02:31
it's on the spot you've got to think on your feet. I'm not very good at that.
