00:00:18
And from now on, we will call you big kitty.
00:00:21
And from now on, we will call you, Big Kitty!
00:00:25
Oh, hello friends!
00:00:31
I am sure just like little kitty, you too must be worried about your height.
00:00:33
And wondering, why do we stop growing once we become adults?
00:00:38
So, in today's episode, let us explore the answer to this vital question that we all relate to.
00:00:44
And that is, why do we stop growing?
00:00:52
Zoom in!
00:00:56
So, why do you stop growing?
00:00:59
Let us start from the very essence of life, that is, the cell.
00:01:02
Yes, it all begins when one single cell splits into billions of cells..
00:01:09
..and work in harmony to form a complex organism like you.
00:01:15
And once you are born as a tiny baby, you continue to develop and grow taller..
00:01:21
..until the completion of puberty when your genetic programming tells you to stop growing further.
00:01:27
Yes, it is our genes made of DNA that determines your growth process.
00:01:35
But why does it happen?
00:01:42
How did it happen?
00:01:44
Well, that's because after the end of puberty, your body begins generating estrogens.
00:01:46
Which is a growth hormone.
00:01:54
It is the high concentration of estrogen in the blood that shuts the receptors in the bone.
00:01:56
And thus stopping you from growing any further.
00:02:03
I know a lot of you must be wondering, what is the point of it?
00:02:07
Why don't we just keep growing taller?
00:02:11
Well, even though it might sound fascinating, it won't be that exciting to keep growing taller ever and ever.
00:02:16
And it may cause several issues as it may put a lot of stress on your bones and muscles and can lead to arthritis.
00:02:24
One such condition that causes us to grow more than usual is a disorder called gigantism
00:02:34
In which a person's arms and legs grow unusually long
00:02:41
And the height can exceed more than 8 feet
00:02:46
Gigantism occurs when the pituitary gland makes too much growth hormone due to a tumor on the gland
00:02:50
Another such condition is a chronic disease called acromegaly, in which hands, feet and
00:02:59
jaw overgrows.
00:03:08
The difference between acromegaly and gigantism is that acromegaly occurs in adults, typically
00:03:11
between the ages of 30 and 50 whereas gigantism develops in childhood.
00:03:18
So just be glad with how you look and make the most out of the precious gift we call, life!
00:03:26
Trivia Time!
00:03:35
Did you know your height changes all day long?
00:03:38
Yes, just like your weight fluctuates throughout the day, your height can too.
00:03:41
You are tallest when you wake up and you may be as much as 1 cm shorter by the day's end.
00:03:46
That happens because the discs in your spine get compressed from being upright all day.
00:03:53
Also, did you know that your height starts to shrink at the age of 40?
00:04:02
That's because your spine starts losing water that makes it compress gradually.
00:04:08
But the good news is that working on your posture and regular exercise may help counter height loss.
00:04:14
So, keep stretching.
00:04:22
It's question time.
00:04:26
