NASA Connect Segment explores a National Arts, Sciences and Technology Education Initiative called the Mars Millenium Project. Allows students to participate in activity to design a community for Mars inhabitants in the year 2030.

I'm here at Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia where students from Bayside 00:00:00
Middle School along with their partner school, Brandon Middle School, have been involved 00:00:05
in a quest as participants in the Mars Millennium Project, a national arts, sciences and technology 00:00:09
education initiative. 00:00:14
Let's check in with the students to learn about their quest. 00:00:16
The Mars Millennium Project challenges teams across the nation to design a community for 00:00:19
100 people arriving on Mars in the year 2030. 00:00:25
We have used this challenge to create an online activity to work on one aspect of building 00:00:28
a Mars community, the development of a public relations campaign to gather public support 00:00:33
for the Mars mission. 00:00:39
Our quest can be broken down into five simple steps. 00:00:41
Step one, reflection. 00:00:45
Our teachers explained to us our mission. 00:00:47
We divided ourselves into four groups, mission commanders, environmental specialists, natural 00:00:49
resource engineers, and astronomy specialists. 00:00:55
Each group had specific questions to research and think about. 00:00:58
Step two, imagine. 00:01:03
We took the knowledge gained from our research to write a survey and then brainstormed how 00:01:05
to use technology to conduct an electronic poll and to tabulate the results. 00:01:10
In the process, we gained experience in the use of software for word processing and spreadsheets. 00:01:16
Step three, discover. 00:01:23
The results of our electronic survey were analyzed. 00:01:24
This information helped us see what were key issues to the public so we might address them 00:01:28
in our advertising campaign. 00:01:34
Step four, create. 00:01:37
We have now entered the design phase of our quest where we are creating ads and sharing 00:01:38
our presentations with our partner school using video conferencing technology. 00:01:44
Step five, share. 00:01:50
Our final step will be to share with NASA and others our Mars advertising campaign in 00:01:52
the form of a multimedia presentation that we will post on the NASA Connect website. 00:01:57
Also, we will post our electronic survey for others to try and to make their own comparisons. 00:02:03

Now, as a final incentive, registered submissions to the Mars Millennium Project received by 00:02:21
June 1, 2000 will be placed on a microchip for transfer to Mars on a future NASA mission. 00:02:27
