Now we're going to learn about centuries. 00:00:00
What is a century? 00:00:04
Well, it's 100 years. 00:00:07
We use centuries to talk about a period of time. 00:00:10
In the previous video, we looked at how to say years. 00:00:15
For example, 1423, 1605, 731, 2008. 00:00:19
Now we're going to learn how to talk about centuries. 00:00:31
Do you know what century we're in now? Well we're in the 21st century. Do you know why? 00:00:35
Let's have a look and see if we can understand. When you are born you are zero years old 00:00:43
but during the next 12 months we say you are in your first year of life. 00:00:56
Then you have your first birthday. You are now one year old, because you have lived for one year. 00:01:02
But you are now starting your second year of life. 00:01:11
When you have your next birthday, you are two years old, but you are starting your third year of life, and so on. 00:01:16
Do you know what year of life are you in now? Have a think. Well, it's the same thing for centuries. 00:01:28
As we learnt before, a century is a hundred years. So let's have a look at this graph below. 00:01:43
Our calendar started with the birth of Christ. We say that was year one and it was the first century. 00:01:52
so from 1 AD until 99 AD it was the first century. At the end of a hundred 00:02:01
years the second century began. Can you see the pattern? Here is a table with 00:02:11
years and the centuries they are in. The year 992 was in the 10th century. 1067 00:02:27
in the 11th century, 1169 in the 12th century, 1299 in the 13th century, 1327 in the 14th 00:02:38
century, 1411 in the 15th century, 1506 in the 16th century and 1600 in the 17th century. 00:02:55
So can you see the pattern here? The 12th century is from 1100 to 1199. When you read 00:03:11
that Columbus discovered America in 1492, you can say America was discovered in the 00:03:23
15th century. Here is another table with some years and 00:03:32
the centuries they are in. 1134 in the 12th century, 1367 in the 14th 00:03:39
892 in the 9th century, 1999 in the 20th century, 1727 in the 18th century, 411 in the 5th century, 00:03:51
1406 in the 15th century and the year 2000 in the 21st century and now it's 00:04:10
your turn I want you to write and say the centuries for each year so for 00:04:22
example the year 1287 is in the 13th century have a look and try and say 00:04:31
them. How are we doing? Do we know? What year is 478? It's in the 5th century. 00:04:43
Fantastic. And what about 1444? Yes, that's right, the 15th century. So carry 00:05:01
on and do your best. 00:05:11
