Okay, second part, to, in order to, or so as to. 00:00:00
We use these three expressions, we could say, to answer the question why. 00:00:09
We use these to tell the reason why someone did something, the purpose. 00:00:17
So for example, I can say, I went to the cinema to watch a movie, okay, so why did I go to 00:00:24
the cinema? 00:00:32
I went to the cinema to watch a movie. 00:00:33
So we use to followed by the verb in infinitive. 00:00:36
Remember the verb in infinitive has no s, no ed, nothing, just the base form. 00:00:39
So why did I go to the cinema? 00:00:46
I went to the cinema to watch a movie. 00:00:49
I'm telling you why. 00:00:51
I'm telling you the purpose. 00:00:52
We can also say, I went to the cinema in order to watch a movie, or I went to the cinema 00:00:55
so as to watch a movie. 00:01:02
These mean the same as to, but they are more formal, okay, but they have the same meaning. 00:01:06
You could say, to watch a movie, so as to watch a movie, or in order to watch a movie. 00:01:13
Okay, they are the same. 00:01:19
They are just in order to, and so as to are much more formal, okay? 00:01:21
If we wanted to do the negative, okay, we would need to use not before to. 00:01:28
So in order not to, and so as not to. 00:01:36
We'll see some examples now. 00:01:41
So examples, I phoned her, I phoned my mother to ask her about her holiday, okay? 00:01:43
So why did I go, why did I phone my mom? 00:01:54
I phoned my mom to ask her about her holiday, or we could say, in order to ask her about 00:01:58
her holiday, or so as to ask her about her holiday, okay? 00:02:05
Or you're saying, why I did something, or we could say, you must hand in all the exercises 00:02:10
the teacher tells you in order to, to, or so as to pass, okay? 00:02:19
So why do you need to hand in all the exercises to the teacher to pass the subject? 00:02:27
Or speak quietly, speak quietly in order not to wake the baby, or speak quietly so 00:02:34
as not to wake the baby, okay? 00:02:43
No mystery. 00:02:47
We just use to in order to, or so as to, to say why we do something. 00:02:48
Bye bye! 00:02:55
