Thanks, Dr. Shepard. 00:00:00
Hey guys, check out this really cool web activity 00:00:04
that should motivate you to learn more 00:00:07
about the 12 national applications. 00:00:09
Thank you, sir. 00:00:12
Going fishing! 00:00:14
Hey, let's take a look at two really cool web activities 00:00:16
developed by space stars 00:00:19
to learn more about two of the Earth's subsystems, 00:00:21
the lithosphere and the hydrosphere. 00:00:24
The two web activities are called 00:00:27
Earthquake Hunters and Water World, 00:00:29
and both activities can be downloaded 00:00:31
from the NASA Connect website. 00:00:33
Do you have what it takes to be an earthquake hunter? 00:00:35
NASA has a very important satellite system 00:00:38
called the Global Earthquake Satellite System, 00:00:41
or GESS, 00:00:44
that is very concerned with tectonic activity 00:00:46
on the Earth's surface. 00:00:49
Say, do you know what tectonic means? 00:00:51
Well, it pertains to the structure 00:00:54
or movement of the Earth's crust. 00:00:56
Now, this activity lets you step into the shoes 00:00:59
of the scientists studying information from GESS 00:01:02
by taking a look at the tectonic activity on Earth. 00:01:06
You will use a Geographic Information Systems, 00:01:09
or GIS, software tool 00:01:12
to allow you to analyze different types of data, 00:01:14
explore and investigate 00:01:17
where the majority of earthquakes took place 00:01:19
between 2002 and 2003. 00:01:22
Were they around large cities, such as Los Angeles, 00:01:25
Tokyo, Japan, or Mexico City, Mexico? 00:01:28
Do they occur all over the world, 00:01:32
or in just certain locations? 00:01:34
Is there a relationship between earthquakes 00:01:36
and plate boundaries? 00:01:38
It is your job to determine 00:01:40
where the majority of earthquakes occur around the world 00:01:42
and how many people they affect. 00:01:45
Can you forecast where the next earthquakes will occur? 00:01:47
In the second web activity called Water World, 00:01:50
students will explore the continent of Antarctica. 00:01:53
Approximately 90% of the world's snow and ice 00:01:56
can be found in Antarctica, 00:01:59
but there is more to this mysterious continent than just that. 00:02:01
What if all the frozen snow and ice on Antarctica melted? 00:02:05
Imagine what would happen if 30 million cubic kilometers 00:02:09
of snow and ice became part of the hydrosphere. 00:02:12
Students, you will analyze the map of the world 00:02:15
when the oceans are 5 meters, 50 meters, 00:02:18
and 73 meters above normal sea level. 00:02:21
What area of the world will be affected 00:02:24
by a 5-meter increase in sea level? 00:02:26
What about a 50-meter increase, 00:02:28
or a total thaw of Antarctica? 00:02:30
Will the place where you live still be above sea level? 00:02:33
The answers to all these questions are left for you to decide. 00:02:37
Okay, guys, now we can finally get to that question 00:02:42
that hasn't been answered. 00:02:45
How is the Earth system part of larger systems? 00:02:48
The answer to that question is left up to you. 00:02:51
Your challenge is to answer the question 00:02:54
based on what you learned from this program. 00:02:56
Develop a PowerPoint presentation, 00:02:59
write a report, or even design a piece of artwork. 00:03:01
Students, check out the Earth System Science Song on our website, 00:03:05
developed by Magic State of the Arts 00:03:09
and heard at the end of this program. 00:03:11
It might guide you in finding the answer to your question. 00:03:13
Submit your presentation, report, or artwork 00:03:17
to the NASA Connect website. 00:03:20
There's a good chance that your presentation 00:03:22
will be seen by millions of students across the country. 00:03:24
We look forward to your submittals. 00:03:27
Well, guys, that wraps up another episode of NASA Connect. 00:03:29
We'd like to thank everyone who helped make this program possible. 00:03:32
Got a comment, question, or suggestion? 00:03:35
Then email them to connect at lark.nasa.gov. 00:03:38
Or pick up a pen and mail them to NASA Connect, 00:03:43
NASA's Center for Distance Learning, 00:03:46
NASA Langley Research Center, Mail Stop 400, 00:03:48
Hampton, Virginia, 23681. 00:03:51
Teachers, if you would like a videotape of this program 00:03:54
and the accompanying educator guide, 00:03:57
check out the NASA Connect website. 00:03:59
