Okay, hello everybody. Today we are going to look at the regular past tenses, how to write them, the spelling rules, and how to pronounce them, okay? 00:00:00
These two things need a lot of practice, no? Before, of course, it's not learning by heart the rules, just practice, but you have them, okay? 00:00:13
So let's see the spelling rules. When we have a verb that ends in e in the infinitive form, we only need to add the d. Live, lived, stir, stirred. When they end in vowel plus y, we add ed. Stay, stayed, played, played. 00:00:23
When it ends in consonant, plus y, ok, we change the y to an i and add ed. 00:00:48
Try, tried. 00:00:58
Carry, carried. 00:01:00
So again, notice the difference. 00:01:03
Vowel, y, we add ed only. 00:01:06
Consonant Y, we need to change the Y into an I and add ED. When we have one syllable, not, 00:01:11
with a single vowel and ending in single consonant, ok, to make the past for adding the ED, we need 00:01:25
to double the final consonant. You see? Now we have two Ds and then we add ED. 00:01:37
Not, noted. Ripped, ripped. And finally we have when we have two syllables, commit, 00:01:45
and the stress is on the second syllable, okay, here, and ends in single consonant, 00:01:56
only one T. To be able to make the past or to write it, we need to double the 00:02:05
consonant to Ts and add ED. Commit, committed. Prefer, preferred. Sorry, what 00:02:13
about the pronunciation of these regular past tenses? Okay, we have three ways in 00:02:23
which the past tense can be pronounced. Let's see. When the infinitive form of 00:02:31
the verb ends in voiceless sounds, that is to say p, okay, in p, in a k, in an s, th, sh, f, x or h, 00:02:37
these are consonants we have which are voiceless, okay? Then we pronounce the ed 00:02:51
as a T so ask asked brush brushed dress dressed finish finished stop stopped of 00:03:00
course you have no you don't have to do it like that no asked brushed dressed 00:03:12
finished stopped yes notice here again one syllable okay 00:03:17
one single a consonant and only I mean one single vowel and then ending in one 00:03:28
consonant we double it and add ed. When the infinitive form of the verb ends in 00:03:36
voiceless sounds such as the l v n m r b v g w y and vowel sounds in this case 00:03:44
we pronounce the ED as a D okay agree agreed allow allowed answer answered 00:03:54
cold cold enjoy enjoyed and finally the third way in which we can pronounce the 00:04:04
ED ending is in ID okay if the last sound in the infinitive verb is a T or a 00:04:15
D. There is where we use this. Count, counted. Afford, afforded. End, ended. Expect, expected. 00:04:23
Invite, invited. Okay? So again, this is all for... 00:04:32
