Hola Chicos, Chicas, ladies and gentlemen.
00:00:00
Welcome back to another episode of Making Things with Alex.
00:00:03
So I saw that a lot of you made some pancakes the other day from my video.
00:00:07
It warmed my heart, made me feel special.
00:00:11
I thought, why not do another video?
00:00:13
We'll make something different.
00:00:15
So in this episode, we're going to make something very simple, something very interesting.
00:00:16
I'm feeling a bit lazy, so we're going to make it in a bag.
00:00:22
What is it?
00:00:26
We're making a bread that I used to eat all the time when I was a kid at my best friend's
00:00:27
house.
00:00:32
It's called challah bread.
00:00:33
So let's get started.
00:00:34
What is the first thing we're going to need?
00:00:37
As I said before, a giant bag, three liters, and it needs to seal on top, which means no
00:00:39
air can escape.
00:00:47
So a bag that seals.
00:00:48
thing we're going to need is some yeast levadura de panaderia okay this is going to help the bread
00:00:51
rise all right so this ingredient super important yeast oh hey next thing we're going to need is
00:01:00
three tablespoons of sugar azucar a tablespoon looks something like this we'll need three of
00:01:08
those. Then we're going to need a half a tablespoon of salt. So half a one of these, some salt. Then
00:01:16
we're going to need 375 grams of all-purpose flour. Harina de trigo, I think. And then finally we're
00:01:25
going to need 78 grams of oil. Got it? Good. Now the fun begins. But before the fun begins, we need
00:01:37
237 grams of warm water, not hot water, not cold water, right in the middle. Now
00:01:46
the fun begins. Let's do this. Now we're going to put all of our ingredients inside this bag.
00:01:54
So let's get started. We'll add the salt. We'll add the sugar. We will add the yeast.
00:02:02
make sure all of it's at the bottom there the most important thing about cooking is being prepared
00:02:13
okay so make sure you have all your ingredients ready and prepared to go so we're going to add
00:02:25
this yeast into the bag the warm water hello uh-oh you're going to start to hear some sounds
00:02:33
sounds pretty cool and we're going to add the oil and finally going to add the flour be careful
00:02:44
with the flour it could get messy if you're not careful okay now seal your bag okay we're going
00:02:53
to take this bag shake it around a bit mix all the ingredients together okay have some fun with
00:03:01
it enjoy it throw it up pop it down don't break the bag though we want our bag to stay together
00:03:07
we don't want any holes because we need the air to build up okay now it's starting to look like dough
00:03:13
if you've ever seen pizza before kind of looks like that so this is what our dough looks like
00:03:20
close up now we're going to put this bag into a big bowl of warm water again we need warm water
00:03:27
not hot not cold in the middle warm we're going to put it here we're going to let it sit for 30
00:03:35
minutes so I'll see you in 30 minutes oh hey so while we're waiting for the dough
00:03:42
to rise we can prepare 59 grams of all-purpose flour we're going to add
00:03:50
this to the bag in 30 minutes okay so we've waited 30 minutes take it out of
00:03:57
the water move the water open the bag let out the air give it a smell smells
00:04:04
like dough. We're going to add the flour that we prepared 30 minutes ago. We're going to put it
00:04:12
into the bag. We're going to seal the bag and we're going to mix it up again. We're adding
00:04:16
the flour now so that the dough does not stick to the bag. Sticking is when it attaches itself
00:04:27
to the plastic. It'll be very difficult to remove the dough from the bag. So we're adding the flour
00:04:35
now. Have fun with it, like I said before. Put it on your head. Uh-oh, be careful though. Don't make
00:04:40
a mess, all right? If you've got a little brother or a little sister, maybe you can pass it to them,
00:04:46
but take advantage. If you've got family members that are enjoying this process with you,
00:04:51
because pretty soon you're going to have some beautiful challah bread to share with your family.
00:04:58
we're going to let this sit for one hour so i'll see you in one hour ciao ciao okay so we've waited
00:05:04
about an hour a little bit longer than an hour for the dough to rise completely now we're going
00:05:12
to take the dough out of the bag okay a good idea is to take some flour sprinkle it across your
00:05:18
board just in case so that the dough doesn't stick too much to the board. Okay
00:05:25
let's take this out.
00:05:36
Get ourselves a nice ball. We're gonna break this into three pieces, okay? Three
00:05:40
equal pieces. We're gonna make three strands. What are strands? Strands are
00:05:49
like ropes, little tiny ropes. You'll see what I mean in just a moment.
00:06:00
All right, so we created three strands of dough. Now what are we going to do with them? We're going
00:06:06
to braid them. So maybe some of you have braided each other's hair before. Right now my hair is
00:06:12
kind of short, so you can't braid my hair. Sadly, I know, I wish I could braid my hair. But instead,
00:06:17
I'm going to braid some dough. So check this out. What we're going to do is connect them
00:06:23
at the top like this, okay? And then you fold it over like so.
00:06:27
Our challah bread. So we're going to take this and transfer it to a baking sheet with non-stick
00:06:48
paper. All right, I'll see you in a couple moments. So we've transferred our dough to the baking sheet
00:07:07
just like this. We had a little extra, so what we're going to do is make a nice bun. You can
00:07:15
make a hamburger, put it in between this bread. So we'll plop that right next to it, just like that.
00:07:21
We're going to let this sit for 15 minutes to let it rise just a little bit more. In the meantime,
00:07:26
we set our oven to 150 degrees Celsius for 40 minutes. In the meantime, we're
00:07:32
going to make an egg wash. What is an egg wash? Egg wash is egg with a little bit
00:07:41
of liquid. Today we're going to use just a little bit of water, okay? Tiny bit. And
00:07:46
then you're gonna take a fork and you're gonna mix this bad boy together just
00:07:53
like that. What are we going to use this for? Well, we're gonna take this
00:07:58
mixture this egg wash we're going to brush it on top of the bread it's gonna
00:08:02
give it a nice crispy golden color alright so I'll check back in with you
00:08:08
in a couple minutes okay so we've waited 15 minutes now it's time to take our
00:08:13
egg wash and brush it on top so at home you maybe have a brush but you don't
00:08:19
need a brush you can always use a spoon and sort of wipe it across but I'm
00:08:26
gonna use my brush so you take that and you just stroke it on top just like so
00:08:33
nice and carefully with love con amor you know what I mean okay now at this
00:08:41
stage you can add things on top I'm going to add sesame seeds sesamo or you
00:08:48
could add salt, pepper, whatever you like. I like the flavor of sesame seeds, so I'm
00:08:55
going to put some into my hand. Make sure you've washed your hands for 20 seconds
00:09:00
at least before you put anything in them. And I'm just gonna sprinkle it on top.
00:09:04
All right, we take this, we put it in our oven, which we preheated to 150 degrees
00:09:15
Celsius and we're going to check on this in 40 minutes, okay? When the top of it starts to get
00:09:24
golden, that's when it's ready, okay? Okay, so it's been 40 minutes. The kitchen is starting
00:09:31
to smell like a bakery. It's really sweet. I'm super excited, but don't get too excited. When
00:09:40
you open the oven, there's going to be a lot of hot air coming out, so let that pass through
00:09:47
before you reach for the bread.
00:09:51
Okay, I am so excited for this.
00:09:54
Oh, beautiful, beautiful.
00:09:59
Here, take a look.
00:10:02
You've got that braid, that beautiful design
00:10:04
that we made together, and it's nice and gold on top.
00:10:06
I'm gonna set this down for just a couple minutes,
00:10:10
let it cool down.
00:10:12
I know it's difficult, you wanna eat it right away,
00:10:14
but let it sit, let it cool, let the bread rest,
00:10:17
And then in a few moments, we'll dig in.
00:10:20
Cool.
00:10:23
So we've let our bread rest for a little bit.
00:10:24
It's cooled off.
00:10:26
Now it's time to enjoy it.
00:10:28
We spent all day preparing and watching this thing grow.
00:10:29
It's almost like a little child.
00:10:34
You've watched it from when it was a baby.
00:10:36
Now it's an adult and now you have to eat your child.
00:10:38
It's a bit strange, but this is the world we live in.
00:10:41
So we're gonna take our cutting knife.
00:10:43
Be very careful with it, okay?
00:10:47
Don't just grab it like I did, all right?
00:10:48
And we'll just make a slice through.
00:10:50
Ah, look at the inside.
00:10:54
Nice and layered and beautiful.
00:10:55
You can see the steam coming out.
00:10:58
Ah, gorgeous.
00:11:00
Gorgeous.
00:11:02
I'm gonna take a bite.
00:11:04
We did it again.
00:11:10
This is an activity you can do all day long
00:11:12
with your mother or father, brother or sister,
00:11:14
whomever you like to do it with.
00:11:18
It's a good time to prepare the bread, put it in the oven,
00:11:20
do some homework, play some video games,
00:11:23
read a book, listen to music.
00:11:25
You have all the time in the world to just relax,
00:11:27
make some bread, you can use it later for dinner.
00:11:30
It's perfect.
00:11:33
I hope you enjoyed the video
00:11:34
and I can't wait to see you soon.
