As you already know, your character is a part of your personality that can change with time. 00:00:01
You build your character throughout time, changing what you do. 00:00:08
Your character depends on the kind of things you learn, on the environment, on the culture and society you live in. 00:00:13
Different people in different places, wear differently, speak differently, have different values, customs and habits. 00:00:21
So we need to learn these habits, these customs and these values in order to become a normal and integrated part of the society we live in. 00:00:29
This process is called socialization. 00:00:42
Socialization is the process in which we learn how to be part of the society we live in. 00:00:46
Of course, socialization begins in the family. 00:00:52
This is what we call primary socialization. 00:00:55
Our parents teach us our language, the basic rules, what to do, what should be avoided, how to behave. 00:00:59
But there is later a second process that is also very important and is called secondary socialization. 00:01:07
This takes place during adolescence and in this secondary socialization process, 00:01:14
the group of friends, the group of peers plays a key role 00:01:21
because we learn from other people like us how to behave, what to do, 00:01:25
what is right or wrong to do with people like us. 00:01:30
Being an active member of society is important 00:01:35
and makes us an active citizen of the country or society we live in. 00:01:39
But we must take into account that different societies have different rules, 00:01:46
different values, different ways of life. 00:01:50
That is what we call culture. 00:01:53
The culture of a society is the way of life, 00:01:56
their values, their attitudes, their customs, their rules, 00:01:59
and they can be different. 00:02:03
They change from place to place and they change with time. 00:02:05
Different societies have different cultures, and this is good. 00:02:11
Diversity is rich and makes our life more interesting and more passionate. 00:02:16
it. But there is a limit to cultural diversity. The limit is the respect of human rights. It's 00:02:22
okay that other countries eat different things or dress differently or think differently than us. 00:02:29
It is good. But it is not good if their way of life is against human rights. So there is a limit 00:02:36
to cultural diversity. We should celebrate our differences as long as they respect human 00:02:45
dignity everywhere. And we must be cautious because abuse of human rights is not something 00:02:51
that happens only in countries that are far away from us or in times of history that are far away 00:02:58
from us. It also happens here and now. There are certain attitudes that we should always avoid 00:03:05
because they are violations of human rights. Let's revise some of these attitudes against 00:03:12
human dignity. For example, racism. Racism happens when people are discriminated against 00:03:18
because of their aspect. For example, because of their skin color. You should be careful not to 00:03:27
confuse racism and xenophobia. Xenophobia is also discrimination, but in this case it's discrimination 00:03:35
against people because of their origin, because of the country they come from. For example, 00:03:43
a xenophobic person hates people because they are foreigners. Another attitude against human rights 00:03:50
is sexism, which is discrimination against a group of people because of their gender. Usually, 00:03:57
women are discriminated so that's what generally happens that sexism affects 00:04:03
them and they are mistreated they are not treated equally and that happens 00:04:09
unfortunately today in our society as well because women and men do not always 00:04:14
earn the same salary even if they do the same job another important attitude 00:04:19
against human rights is homophobia homophobia is rejection of people that 00:04:25
are homosexual. 00:04:31
Homosexual people have been discriminated against for a long time, but this is totally 00:04:33
unfair because everyone can live and laugh and do whatever you want as long as you respect 00:04:38
other people as well. 00:04:44
