Task 2. You will watch part of an interview. Read through the notes below and complete them 00:00:00
by filling in the gaps with the exact words you hear. Gap 0 is an example. Now, read the notes. 00:00:06
He is a Golden Globe, Tony, and Emmy Award winning actor, and now he has scored his 00:01:40
fifth Emmy nomination for his role in Bad Education. Good morning, Hugh Jackman. Thanks 00:01:44
for being with us. Congratulations. Congratulations on the Emmy nomination. As we mentioned, 00:01:50
it's not your first, but interestingly enough, your other big Emmy win was back in 2005 for 00:01:55
hosting the Tony Awards. And you say that was particularly surprising. Why? 00:02:00
I didn't know there was a category for that. So when someone rang me and said, 00:02:06
you've been nominated, I was like, I haven't done any TV. Well, I didn't apply. I hadn't 00:02:11
done any in a while. And they said, oh, no, it was for hosting the Tonys. I was like, oh, okay. 00:02:15
And so I presumed I wasn't going to win. But I went. I was in LA and I went. And then, yeah, 00:02:19
Lo and behold, I won. It was all very, very surprising. So I have a little more heads up 00:02:24
this time. A little more heads up. But this time, the ceremony is remote due to COVID-19. 00:02:28
So what are your big plans for the night? I will be dressing up from the waist up anyway. I can 00:02:33
promise you that. And from someone who's, I've hosted a bunch of award shows, the Tonys, the 00:02:39
Oscars. I can tell you, by the way, I can't tell you who, I wish I could. I remember in the first 00:02:44
commercial break at the oscars i looked down and two very big a-list movie stars were pulling hip 00:02:50
flasks out of their jacket pocket super slim line and i was like oh that's how you get through these 00:02:55
things so in this case virtually it's just going to be like an aussie bar literally just under the 00:03:02
camera right in front of me just there great great great way to do it we know you have this long 00:03:08
running feud with your buddy ryan reynolds and um he sent you a congratulatory message when he 00:03:12
found out you were nominated for an Emmy, but it was a little snarky. So have you checked on him 00:03:18
since? And how's he doing? I check on Blake all the time. I just can't imagine what this whole 00:03:22
isolation has been like. I mean, really, that's months in the same house with Ryan. So I check on 00:03:28
her all the time. She really, really appreciates that. I think it's been very difficult 00:03:35
for her. But no, Ryan and I, it's, you know, it's sort of like big brother, little brother. 00:03:39
And so I just keep trying to take the high road all the time. 00:03:45
It's very difficult training. 00:03:49
I just, you know, I'm trying to teach him that, you know, he won't listen. 00:03:50
Hugh, this is being called one of your most powerful performances yet. 00:03:56
This is the true story of the largest public school embezzlement in American history. 00:04:00
You play Dr. Frank Tassone, the man who's at the center of it. 00:04:05
But you say you don't think of him as a villain. 00:04:09
Why not? 00:04:11
No, I don't. 00:04:13
Actually, that's one of the reasons I wanted to do this, because he's human, who erred. 00:04:14
He went to jail. 00:04:19
He ended up paying all the $2.2 million back, and he regrets it completely. 00:04:20
So I was more interested in how does that happen? 00:04:27
How do good people, he was one of the best, if not the best superintendent in the country, 00:04:29
devoted his life to being a teacher and then being an administrator in public schools. 00:04:34
How do people go that far off? 00:04:39
How does it happen? 00:04:41
how does a culture somehow make things okay when we know they're not that's what really 00:04:42
interested me it's sort of a cautionary tale but i don't the dogs could not be eating more 00:04:47
loudly in the background they really have no respect for you guys i'm so sorry it's called 00:04:52
interviews interviews during quarantine things like that happen you're at home we absolutely 00:04:58
understand it we absolutely get it and um you know let's take a look we're gonna take a 30 minute 00:05:02
32nd look at a clip of bad education here we go check it out you stole from the schools 00:05:06
and from from the taxpayers from from the kids we're supposed to serve i think this 00:05:13
kind of behavior goes beyond the bounds of immoral it's it's cruel it's it's heinous it's it's 00:05:21
sociopathic even sociopathic shameless self-interest the the the unstable personality 00:05:28
the parade of rotten marriages. 00:05:36
Frank! 00:05:39
And this apparently was your first time 00:05:43
working with the wonderful Allison Janney. 00:05:45
You two go head-to-head throughout the movie. 00:05:48
What was that like? 00:05:50
I'm so glad you showed that scene 00:05:52
because if you imagine when the camera was on her, 00:05:54
my face was literally next to the camera 00:05:57
for about an hour while she did that scene. 00:05:59
And I remember thinking, 00:06:02
wow, I did four years of study at drama school 00:06:03
and I could have traded all of that in for that hour. 00:06:05
like she's it was a master class she's so the ability to still be funny in scenes where there's 00:06:08
tears coming down her face her the nuances she's astonishing and you know she ad-libs she's open 00:06:14
she's she loves it and you know it's just for me one of those great examples there's someone who 00:06:22
was a broadway sort of staple a legend really on broadway for years before the west wing happened 00:06:28
and i'm thrilled she's getting all the kudos she deserves well it was a great castle round i have 00:06:33
to say. It was amazing. It really is. And we've seen the movie and you're getting the kudos you 00:06:38
deserve as well. And another reason to celebrate this morning, Wolverine is streaming on Disney 00:06:41
Plus now. It's been 20 years since your first performance as Wolverine. Does it surprise you 00:06:48
that 20 years later, two decades later, people are still talking about your character? 00:06:52
Man, I remember. So that was my first movie in America. And I had two or three friends in the 00:06:57
business say, hey, dude, before this movie comes out, the word on the street is this is not good. 00:07:02
make sure you booked another film that way at least you got another shot right so i remember 00:07:06
hustling around la doing in the you know in auditions for just to get something and i got 00:07:11
another film thank god i remember thinking i get one more shot and when it came out no one knew 00:07:16
that was coming no one knew that i would end up playing the role nine times it it it still 00:07:21
surprised me thrills me uh and i'm so grateful to those fans really i am now listen again 00:07:26
