Hello, this is Elizabeth, and today we will be talking about Social Sciences 5, Unit 6, Lesson 3. 00:00:00
And this lesson today is called, What Happened in the Age of Discovery? 00:00:08
If you've already read about this in your textbook, this will be a little bit of a review for you. 00:00:15
But if you haven't, feel free to follow along. 00:00:20
So, during the early modern age, many explorers made voyages to distant lands. 00:00:23
They discovered and conquered new lands and peoples. 00:00:29
This is why this period is called the Age of Discovery. 00:00:33
These explorers were called conquistadors. 00:00:37
So today we will be talking about four of the really important conquistadors. 00:00:40
And these are the four people mentioned in your book. 00:00:45
So the first person we're going to be talking about is Christopher Columbus. 00:00:48
So you may have heard his name before. 00:00:52
in 1492 he went on a voyage to find a western route to asia he ended up thinking he had landed 00:00:54
in asia but really he had discovered america he made three more voyages after that the second 00:01:04
person we're going to be talking about today is hernan cortez and he was a conquistador who went 00:01:12
to Mexico in 1519. He traveled to the Aztec capital and the Aztec king gave him gifts. 00:01:18
However, he captured the king and conquered the Aztecs. He founded Mexico City and became the 00:01:26
governor of New Spain. The third person we're going to be talking about today is Francisco Pizarro 00:01:34
and he was another conquistador. In 1532, he went to Peru. He then took the emperor captive, 00:01:41
conquered the Incas, and became the governor of Peru. And finally, last but not least, 00:01:52
the fourth person we are talking about today is Fernando Magallanes. He was the first person to 00:01:58
sailed across the Pacific Ocean. 00:02:06
He left Spain in 1519 and crossed the Atlantic Ocean. 00:02:08
He sailed around South America and into the Pacific Ocean. 00:02:14
He crossed the Pacific and arrived in the Philippines 00:02:19
where he was killed in the Battle of 1521. 00:02:22
After that, Juan Sebastian Elcano took over the expedition. 00:02:26
He arrived in Spain in 1522. 00:02:31
Elcano became the first person to sail around the world. 00:02:35
All right, in my next video, 00:02:40
we will be doing a little bit of a review of this lesson, 00:02:42
and we will be talking about who, what, where, when, and why. 00:02:45
And these are our five W questions. 00:02:49
All right, I will see you next time. 00:02:53
Have a great day. 00:02:54
