Hello, we are Bombs in Bloom and today we are going to present you our project. 00:00:00
We found out the severe impact of water on the environment, especially to the vegetation, 00:00:15
so we decided to search for a solution to this huge problem. 00:00:20
We investigated the soil properties and discovered that the pH is what enables the plant to grow. 00:00:23
We made several experiments in order to find out the cure to this damaged soil and how 00:00:28
to recover it. 00:00:32
We were concerned about how wars are increasing worldwide and the devastating impact they 00:00:34
are leaving on the growth of plants. 00:00:37
So we asked ourselves, how can we make plants in unaffected areas grow again as they were 00:00:39
before? 00:00:44
During decades, wars have been a severe problem, not just for humans, but also for the ecosystem 00:00:45
where we live. 00:00:50
All the toxic components inside bombs, weapons, etc. created enormous damage in plants. 00:00:51
To find a solution for this problem we had to follow several steps. 00:00:56
Firstly, we took some satellite images to find out if there was any difference between plants before and after the war in Kiev. 00:01:00
We compared these results using the satellite Sentinel-2 L2A during the years 2022 to 2024. 00:01:07
When we obtained the results, we saw that the levels of vegetation had changed drastically, as we can see in these photos. 00:01:13
Apart from the cities being damaged, the original plants were destroyed and this is letting 00:01:20
space for invasive plants that transform the ecosystem to grow. 00:01:25
For example, we have the fissure. 00:01:29
Also, we use another satellite called Sentinel-3, which indicates the crop index. 00:01:31
In these examples, we can see how Zaporizhia and Nicopol changed before and after the war. 00:01:36
Our experiment consists in recreating the harm that wars cause in plants by adding toxic 00:01:42
components, in this case, ink and gasoil, and trying to recover the soil's pH using techniques 00:01:46
such as vermicompost or activating carbon. After executing the experiment, we found out that the 00:01:51
gasoil didn't alter the soil's pH, whereas the ink did. Even though we still added the activated 00:01:57
carbon and the vinegar, this made the soil's pH to transform into 5.5. To the plants that had ink, 00:02:02
we also added sodium percarbonate and worm fumes for trying to help the soil to recover its pH. 00:02:09
This ended up as we planned. Its pH went back to normal. 00:02:14
Then, we have the plant that we tried to immunize, which died. 00:02:18
As the results we obtained demonstrated that immunizing plants wasn't a solution anymore 00:02:22
because the chemicals are only useful as a way to help, and the plant to which we added ink recovered, 00:02:27
our final solution is to add activated carbon to the damaged areas after the war. 00:02:32
Our project's main ideas are to repair the damage of plants after wars and to do it in an ecological way. 00:02:37
Thank you. 00:02:44
