Personal pronouns. 00:00:00
What are personal pronouns? 00:00:02
Okay, the personal pronouns are the words that refer back to something or someone that has already been mentioned. 00:00:04
Examples. 00:00:12
John took the book and opened it. 00:00:14
So, to avoid the repetition of the book, we use the pronoun it. 00:00:17
Peter rang Mary and invited her to dinner. 00:00:23
The same. 00:00:26
Instead of saying Peter rang Mary and invited Mary to dinner, 00:00:27
we just replace the noun Mary by the pronoun here. 00:00:31
My father is very thin because he goes to the gym two hours a day. 00:00:39
Instead of repeating my father, we just use he. 00:00:43
There are two types of personal pronouns, subject pronouns and object pronouns. 00:00:49
Subject pronouns are I, you, he, she, it, we, you and they 00:00:54
And the object pronouns are me, you, him, her, it, us, you and them 00:01:03
Let's learn first of all about subject pronouns 00:01:14
okay subject pronouns are the ones that take the place of nouns that are the subject of a sentence 00:01:21
what is the subject the subject is the person or thing that performs the action and the action is 00:01:28
the verb example maria and cristina go to the cinema okay maria and cristina are the subject 00:01:36
of the sentence. They perform the action of going to the cinema. And the pronoun that we use 00:01:45
to substitute María and Cristina, it's they. They go to the cinema. We are going to see the 00:01:53
different subject pronouns. For the first person singular, we have I. For the second person singular, 00:02:04
we have you 00:02:12
for the third person singular 00:02:15
we have he, she and it 00:02:17
for the first person plural, we 00:02:20
for the second person plural, you 00:02:23
and for the third person plural, they 00:02:26
examples of subject pronouns 00:02:29
ok, my sister loves English 00:02:34
so the subject of the sentence is my sister 00:02:38
and we have to find a pronoun to substitute my sister. 00:02:42
She loves English. 00:02:48
Cristina and I are teachers. 00:02:51
We are teachers. 00:02:54
And George and Larry are friends. 00:02:56
They are friends. 00:02:59
Notice the difference between we and they. 00:03:00
We use we when the speaker is part of the subject. 00:03:03
And we will use they when the person that is speaking is not part of that subject. 00:03:11
Object pronouns. 00:03:23
Object pronouns take the place of nouns that are the object of a sentence. 00:03:25
What is the object of a sentence? 00:03:30
Object will be the person or thing that receives the action. 00:03:32
okay so subject personal thing that performs the action and object personal thing that receives 00:03:36
the action can you help your father okay here the your father is not performing the action 00:03:46
it's receiving therefore is the object of the sentence and we substitute it by him can you help 00:03:56
him the object pronouns are for the first person singular me for the second person singular you 00:04:04
for the third person singular him here it for the first person plural as for the second person 00:04:12
plural you and for the third person plural them examples i would like to meet richard 00:04:20
I would like to meet him 00:04:30
Richard doesn't perform the action 00:04:32
it's me, it's I 00:04:36
the one that wants or would like to meet 00:04:38
another person that is going to receive the action 00:04:41
this book belongs to Daniel and Beatriz 00:04:45
this book belongs to them 00:04:49
this present is for my parents 00:04:51
this present is for them 00:04:54
let's practice a little bit 00:04:56
we are going to look at these three sentences 00:04:59
Mary is feeling much better 00:05:02
John and I are going there later 00:05:05
and my students love PE 00:05:08
we look, first sentence 00:05:10
Mary, second sentence 00:05:14
John and I 00:05:16
and the third sentence 00:05:17
my students 00:05:18
in this case 00:05:20
the three parts 00:05:22
that we have just changed color are subjects of the sentence. So we will substitute by subject 00:05:27
pronouns. Mary is feeling much better will be she is feeling much better. John and I are going there 00:05:37
later will be we are going there later. My students love PE will be they love PE. 00:05:46
We continue a little bit with some more examples. Now let's look at these three sentences. I spoke 00:05:58
to John this morning. Can you give Sarah more cake? Our grandmother lives with my parents, 00:06:08
brothers and i okay in this case john sarah and my parents brothers and i are the objects of this 00:06:16
sentences okay so we have to look for object pronouns so i spoke to john this morning i spoke 00:06:27
to him this morning can you give sarah some more cake can you give her some more cake and 00:06:36
our grandmother lives with my parents 00:06:45
brothers and I 00:06:47
my parents brothers and I 00:06:48
will be 00:06:51
substituted by 00:06:53
our grandmother lives with us 00:06:56
and that's all 00:07:00
I hope you understood 00:07:01
and you have it clear now 00:07:03
bye bye 00:07:06
