Good afternoon everybody, I am recording this video because I cannot attend to the class 00:00:00
and I would like to talk to you a little bit about the so-called fake news, this should 00:00:06
only take a few minutes of your time. 00:00:11
Let me start by saying that I totally reject Conscious Deceit, either by media or public 00:00:15
figures, because it damages society's trust. 00:00:22
Now that I clarified that point, I freely admit that the term fake news can be tricky 00:00:27
if the term is perversely used to disauthorize truthful accounts, I'll elaborate. 00:00:34
Have you ever readily accepted a piece of information that you weren't so sure about, 00:00:41
like for example the existence of the Loch Ness Monster? 00:00:47
Well, I sincerely believe we all have done something like that. 00:00:52
That's what the specialists call misinformation, that is, information that is false but the 00:00:57
person who is disseminating it believes that it is actually true. 00:01:05
Now let's move on to another category, disinformation, that is a blatant lie and the person who is 00:01:11
disseminating it knows that it is false. 00:01:18
The last type of fake news could be information that is based on reality but it is used to 00:01:23
inflict harm on a person, organization or country. 00:01:31
That's what we call malinformation. 00:01:36
This brings me to the key question of how to protect ourselves from fake news. 00:01:40
Did you know that many journalists, social scientists and philosophers have thought about 00:01:45
this problem too? 00:01:51
Well, they have reached some conclusions that I enthusiastically endorse. 00:01:53
Last Thursday we already spoke about some good practices to pursue the truth, like looking 00:01:59
for coherent information, contrasting your sources, avoiding sensationalism and knowing 00:02:09
your own biases. 00:02:19
To conclude my talk, I would like to strongly recommend you to have a look to the short 00:02:21
comic A Day at the Park, which is completely free online and gives us a brief but enticing 00:02:27
story about the nature of truth and knowledge. 00:02:33
And that was it! 00:02:37
I sincerely hope you enjoyed this presentation and I thank you all for your time and attention. 00:02:38
See you soon! 00:02:44
