Contemporary Age 00:00:00
In 1807, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Emperor of France, decided to occupy Portugal, while the King of Spain, Carlos IV, allowed him to cross Spain. 00:00:06
On the way of Portugal, the French troops invade some Spanish cities. 00:00:24
In 1808, the French troops were in Spain, but while Carlos IV was in the Palace of Aranjuez, the population was going to have a riot. This is called the Motín of Aranjuez. 00:00:30
The population forced Carlos IV to abdicate, and his son, Fernando VII, became the new king. 00:01:01
But soon after, Napoleon forced Fernando VII to abdicate, so his brother, José Bonaparte, was proclaimed king. The population called him Pepe Botella. 00:01:16
The population of Madrid didn't accept José Bonaparte as king of Spain, so they rebelled against the French, and the War of Independence started. 00:01:30
The Spanish population fought again with José Bonaparte and the French. This war lasted until 1840, when the French were defeated, and Fernando VII turned as the king of Spain one more time. 00:02:00
During the war, the Spanish Parliament approved the Spanish First Constitution, the Constitution of Cádiz. This constitution limited the king's power and established some rights for the citizens, like the right to vote. 00:02:17
Spain in the 19th century. 00:02:47
Fernando VII was a member of the Bourbon family. He was born in 1784. 00:03:05
Fernando VII was crowned in 1808, but Napoleon Bonaparte forced to abdicate. But first, he established an absolute monarchy. 00:03:14
José Bonaparte was the king in 1812, but he didn't reign very well, so the Spanish Constitution was approved in Cádiz. 00:03:37
Viva la Pepa! 00:03:54
Fernando changed the law, so when he died, his daughter, Isabel II, became queen. 00:04:03
Fun fact! Did you know that since the constitution was approved on March 19th, that José's death, it was named La Pepa? 00:04:10
After the French Revolution in 1814, Fernando VII ruled as the king of Spain. 00:04:23
But he didn't like the Spanish Constitution, so he re-established the absolute monarchy. 00:04:41
He recovered the whole power again. This decision caused political disorder, and as a result, most of the American colonies and territories became independent. 00:04:48
In Spain, according to the law of succession, only men could reign. So Fernando VII changed this law, so his daughter could ascend to the throne. 00:05:00
Isabel II became queen when Fernando VII died in 1833. During her reign, there was a constitutional monarchy that limited her power. 00:05:20
But lots of conflicts, riots, and changes of the government led to a revolution, and in 1868, Isabel II went to France, into exile. 00:05:38
The first Spanish Republic. In 1871, Amadeu de Savoy of Italy became king. 00:05:52
However, he went for a game of Monarchs. He didn't have much support, so he abdicated two years later. 00:06:14
In 1873, members of the Parliament proclaimed the first Spanish Republic, a form of government with no king. The Spanish flag is going to change again. 00:06:22
The emblem of the flag is going to lose the crown on top. In a republic, there are no kings, but in one year of the republic, there will be four presidents. 00:06:36
So a little facts like the war in Cuba are agricultural and industrial problems. We'll finish this with the Spanish Republic. The most important one will be the lack of support. 00:06:53
So in 1874, the son of Isabel II, Alfonso XII, will be crowned as the king of Spain. At the end of this century, Spain lost the last colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. 00:07:06
