Hardware and software – two terms you've probably heard of at one point or another. 00:00:00
The odds are high that you use both on a daily basis, whether it's with your smartphone 00:00:05
or personal computer. 00:00:09
Let's take a deeper look at what these two things are and why they're important. 00:00:10
Hardware is any element of a computer that's physical. 00:00:16
This includes things like monitors, keyboards, and also the insides of devices like microchips 00:00:19
and hard drives. 00:00:24
Hardware is anything that tells hardware what to do and how to do it, including computer 00:00:28
programs and apps on your phone. 00:00:32
So video games, photo editors, and web browsers are just a few examples. 00:00:34
Hardware and software are very different from each other, but they also need one another 00:00:41
in order to function. 00:00:45
Let's look at an example of this using a smartphone. 00:00:47
In this case, the hardware would be the physical phone itself, and the software would be its 00:00:50
operating system and its apps. 00:00:54
If we were to take away the software, we would just have a dead phone in our hands. 00:00:57
It wouldn't be able to make calls, text, or go online because it's not receiving any 00:01:02
kind of instructions. 00:01:07
On the other hand, let's say we have no hardware, meaning there's no actual phone. 00:01:09
If all we have are the programs, we just have a bunch of instructions, but nothing to give 00:01:14
those instructions to. 00:01:17
So the big picture here is that hardware needs software to tell it what to do, but software 00:01:20
also needs hardware in order to act out its directions. 00:01:25
Technology will continue to evolve, and though we may not be sure of how things will look 00:01:30
in, say, a hundred years, this combination of hardware and software will be there serving 00:01:34
as its foundation. 00:01:39
