This video will introduce you to the Technology Design Process.
Okay, good evening ladies and gentlemen. As you can probably guess, we're going to be talking about the technology design process in this video.
00:00:00
And what I'd like you to understand is that almost all forms of technology, while they're being developed, undergo this process.
00:00:08
It's a step-by-step process that most technology follows while it's being developed.
00:00:16
So for this evening's homework, I'd like you to not only watch the video,
00:00:24
but simply jot down very quickly the steps that you have uncovered while watching the video
00:00:29
so that I know that you watched the video and you're ready to do the assignment tomorrow during class.
00:00:38
The first step of any technology design process is a need.
00:00:43
And what I mean by a need is that the technology must have a reason to be developed.
00:00:47
There's no purpose in developing technology if it's not going to serve us in any way,
00:00:54
as it may cost a lot of money, a lot of time, for something that may not be useful.
00:00:59
So if we look even around our classroom, one form of technology might be the clock.
00:01:05
The clock, the need for the clock is to tell time.
00:01:14
The PA system, in order to give us important announcements.
00:01:18
If we look up at the air conditioner and the fan, their need is to keep us cool.
00:01:27
Pencil sharpener, so that we can write and record things.
00:01:35
Even a chair and a table has some sort of need.
00:01:39
It allows us to be organized, it allows us to be comfortable while we're learning.
00:01:46
Okay, so when we look at this chart, it brings up five important points that we're going to discuss over the next couple days.
00:01:53
So if we look at starting with the top left, ask, we need to ask a question and determine what our need is.
00:02:01
And then we need to think about it a little bit.
00:02:10
We need to imagine what we can develop in order to answer our question.
00:02:12
Okay, after we have imagined, we've come up with an idea, we need to plan our idea.
00:02:16
Then we design or build our idea, and once we have tested our idea, then we try to improve it based on the problems that we've witnessed.
00:02:22
So just as a reminder, as we go through the video, make sure you're jotting down the important steps to the technology design process.
00:02:32
We talked about the ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve steps.
00:02:39
As we go through it, I'm going to add a little bit of detail, so be sure to add to your list a little bit as I go through.
00:02:47
Okay, so if we put a little bit more detail into this, we can see that our ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve steps,
00:02:54
we must ask some questions and try to generate a solution by developing our technology.
00:03:03
So when we ask, we want to ask, what is the goal? Why are we creating this technology? What is the need?
00:03:09
When we imagine, we're looking at what the technology will look like
00:03:15
and what kind of research should we do.
00:03:20
When we plan, we're going to think about how we can accomplish the goal most efficiently.
00:03:23
When we create, we're going to build a prototype or a model
00:03:30
and observe if problems occur.
00:03:33
And to improve, we're going to test that model or prototype
00:03:37
and generate solutions or fixes to the original prototype.
00:03:39
Okay, let's take a look at an example that will help you trace through the technology design process.
00:03:45
We're going to look at the example of a car.
00:03:53
Now, if you look in the picture above, this is what most people thought of as a car,
00:03:56
an early prototype of a car back in 1800s, early 1900s.
00:04:04
And compared to what we have today, things have changed.
00:04:10
So today when we think of a car, we think of something that is much more high tech. When we say high tech, it's because we went through the whole technology design process several times over to develop the current cars we have now.
00:04:15
So people asked, how can we make the car better? They imagined, oh, what if we could have reclining seats or a CD player or a trunk to store things? They planned. They came up with a model that they thought could accomplish their goal.
00:04:29
They created a prototype and the prototypes continued to develop.
00:04:46
And then they went back and they tried to solve problems.
00:04:51
They improved their design and created a new design.
00:04:55
So now we have multiple different cars, multiple different structures
00:04:59
that enable us to accomplish the same goal
00:05:04
but are more conducive to everyone's needs or desires.
