Many years ago, in a country in North Africa, there lived a king who had some very strange 00:00:07
customs. 00:00:30
One of this was the way he decided if a prisoner was guilty or not guilty. 00:00:32
Whenever one of his subjects was accused of a serious crime, the king decided that the 00:00:38
fate of the accused would be determined in front of the people. 00:00:43
On the chosen day, the king, his followers and all the people gathered on a small hill. 00:00:48
In front of the hill was a big building with two doors, exactly alike, set side by side. 00:00:56
At the king's sign up, the accused would walk to the doors and open one of them. 00:01:03
Behind one door was a hungry lion which would eat the prisoner as a punishment for his crime. 00:01:10
And the other door was the beautiful woman to whom the prisoner would be married immediately 00:01:16
as a reward for his innocence. 00:01:22
The plan seemed most unfair to the king. 00:01:24
The accused could choose his own fate. 00:01:28
He simply opened the door and was at once either eaten or married. 00:01:32
Now it happened that the king's beautiful daughter, whom he loved about all things, 00:01:37
falling in love with a poor but handsome young soldier. When the king found out 00:01:43
that they loved each other, he put the young man into prison and set a date for 00:01:48
his public trial. Then the king ordered the whole kingdom to be searched for the 00:01:53
biggest lion and the most beautiful woman. Finally, the day of their trial 00:01:58
arrived. The young man entered the field. He was so handsome that the crowd greeted 00:02:05
him with a hand of admiration and fear. How terrible this was for him! 00:02:13
Advancing into the field, the handsome young soldier turned, as was his custom, and bowed 00:02:18
to the king. But he fixed his eyes on the princess, who was sitting on her father's 00:02:24
right. The young man saw in her eyes that the princess knew on which side the lion was 00:02:31
in which the lady there was not a moment to lose his eyes asked her which door shall i choose 00:02:38
the princess knew that the woman her father had chosen was the loveliest in the land 00:02:47
in the past she had seen this woman throw admiring glances at the soldier sometimes 00:02:53
she even suspected that these glances were returned how could she bear to lose her lover 00:02:59
to another woman. How could she bear to see him torn apart by the lion? The princess paused. 00:03:06
Then, acting on the decision she had made after days and nights of weighing the awful choice, 00:03:15
she nodded to the right. The young man saw, and without hesitating, 00:03:22
walked to the right-hand door and opened it and... 00:03:29
