Hello everyone, today I'm sharing my computer screen with you to talk about relative clauses. 00:00:00
Now, there are two different types of relative clauses in English. 00:00:07
Defining relative clauses and non-defining relative clauses. 00:00:11
Defining relative clauses are used to give sensual information about a person or a thing or a place or a time that has been previously mentioned. 00:00:21
Now, the relative pronouns we use are who or that to talk about people, which or that 00:00:30
to talk about things, whose to talk about possession, where to talk about places, and 00:00:39
when to talk about time. 00:00:47
Who or that to talk about people. 00:00:56
We have two different types of examples here. 00:00:58
We'll see why. 00:01:01
James was the man who or that arrived late to the meeting. 00:01:03
as you can see we do not use commas here to talk about to introduce a relative 00:01:06
clause now we can use who or that James was the man who that I invited to the 00:01:16
party now these two relative clauses can be this in this example the relative 00:01:23
pronoun can be omitted as they are not the the subject of invited to the party 00:01:28
the subject is I. So whenever we have a subject afterwards, after the relative pronoun, we 00:01:35
can omit the relative pronoun. As you can see here, there is no subject between the 00:01:42
relative pronoun and the verb because this relative pronoun is the subject of arrives 00:01:49
late to the meeting. Which is used to talk about things. That is a sport which or that 00:01:55
my brother plays. My brother is the subject of plays, so we can omit it. And that is for 00:02:02
which or that is played indoors. In here, there is no subject between the relative pronoun 00:02:09
and the verb, so we cannot omit it. Again, we can use which or that. 00:02:14
Whose, where and when can never be omitted. That is the player whose team is top of the 00:02:21
league. Now, this whose can be translated as cuyo. Where is to talk about places. Land 00:02:27
Sunday is the place where I live, and when is used to talk about time. 00:02:35
Sunday is the day when I play tennis. 00:02:41
In non-defining relative clauses, who and which can never be omitted, 00:02:47
and that cannot be used instead. 00:02:56
Now, non-relative clauses are used to give extra or non-essential information 00:03:02
about a person, a thing, or a place, or a time 00:03:07
that has been previously mentioned. 00:03:10
They are always between commas. 00:03:13
In this example here, 00:03:16
James, who was born in London, 00:03:18
lived in Manchester for a long time. 00:03:21
It's missing. 00:03:25
Which is used to talk about things. 00:03:28
Tennis, which is my favourite sport, 00:03:32
is a very old game. 00:03:34
Who's to talk about possession? 00:03:37
John, whose team is top of the league, is a very good player. 00:03:39
And where it is used to talk about places. 00:03:45
London, where the Olympics were held in 2012, is a great city. 00:03:47
When to talk about time. 00:03:52
Yesterday, when I played tennis, was a warm day. 00:03:55
Now, if we do not give this extra information, nothing happens to the sentence. 00:03:59
Yesterday was a warm day. 00:04:05
London is a great city. 00:04:07
John is a very good player. 00:04:09
Tennis is a very old game. 00:04:11
James lived in Manchester for a long time. 00:04:15
So, this relative clause gives extra information. 00:04:19
That's why it's between commas. 00:04:25
Remember, we can never omit the relative pronoun. 00:04:27
Now, if you have any doubts, please go to OneNote, Unit 7. 00:04:30
and there you can find all the information about relative clauses if 00:04:39
you still have some doubts please ask thank you 00:04:43
