Good morning everyone. In this video we are going to learn about modal verbs. 00:00:10
Should, must and have to are three modal verbs of obligation. 00:00:16
We use have to, must and should to talk about obligation, things that are necessary to do 00:00:23
or give advice about things that are a good idea to do. 00:00:34
We use have to when there is a rule so it is necessary to do something. 00:00:38
Here you have some examples. You have to pass a writing test to get a driving license. 00:00:46
You have to show your ID at the airport. 00:00:54
These two examples express a strong and stern obligation 00:00:57
because if you don't show your ID at the airport, you are not allowed to travel. 00:01:03
The next one is must. 00:01:11
Must is used when the speaker, the person that is talking, thinks it is necessary to do something. 00:01:13
Must is used for personal obligation or moral obligation. 00:01:22
You must tell the truth. 00:01:28
We must go to the supermarket today. 00:01:29
the fridge is empty so now we have to pay attention to the big difference 00:01:32
between have to and must as I told you at the beginning both of them express 00:01:38
obligation but this one is stronger we cannot decide to do this one or not when 00:01:43
we are talking about have to it's because we have an strong and external 00:01:51
obligation okay for example when we are talking about the law or different rules for example 00:01:56
in spain we have to drive on the right we cannot take the car and then right on the left 00:02:03
but must is weaker is not as strong as have to that is why must is used when we are talking about 00:02:11
moral or personal obligation. And then should is used when the speaker gives a recommendation 00:02:20
or a piece of advice, something that the person who is talking thinks is good or bad to do. 00:02:30
I think you should buy the red t-shirt. You should eat more fruit. This person that is talking 00:02:39
is giving an advice. So, in conclusion, when we are talking about obligation, we can use these 00:02:47
three modal verbs, have to, must and should. Remember that have to is used when we are talking 00:02:55
about external and strong obligations such as rules. Must, it's also used to talk about 00:03:03
application but they are not as strong. Here the speaker, the person who is 00:03:11
talking, thinks that something it is necessary and should is used to talk 00:03:18
about advices. 00:03:24
