Okay, today we're going to talk about the passive voice.
00:00:00
Before we speak about the passive voice, we must touch on the active voice.
00:00:05
So, the active voice formula is the subject, then the verb, then the object.
00:00:10
So, an example of this could be, I make a cake.
00:00:21
I is the subject. It could be he, it could be she, it could be I.
00:00:25
Make is obviously the verb and the object is the cake. I make a cake.
00:00:33
Now to turn that into a passive sentence, we need to move these around.
00:00:42
So, the passive form of the sentence would be, a cake is made.
00:00:49
And if you'd like, we could add on, by me, because that would be the subject.
00:00:59
Now, a cake is made, the object is first, then the verb, and the subject is at the end.
00:01:07
or in some cases the subject is not even included.
00:01:18
We use the passive voice for when the subject is not known or important.
00:01:23
The importance of using passive voice is on the action.
00:01:37
so for example a bike was stolen okay we don't know who stole the bike all we know is that the
00:01:42
bike is stolen and that's the important thing here is a chart with the tense the active phrase
00:01:59
and the passive phrase. The passive is made with the auxiliary verb to be and
00:02:09
the past participle of the verb. Just go over what we've learned. A passive
00:02:16
sentence consists of the subject, the verb to be in the correct tense, the past
00:02:23
participle of the verb needed and sometimes the agent is needed. Okay, here
00:02:29
three examples the novel was read by mum in one day the film wasn't liked by
00:02:36
anyone the windows had been broken in all these examples we could have taken
00:02:44
out the the agent okay and you can see that the object has become the subject
00:02:54
This may seem quite complicated, but once you've learned it, it's quite easy.
00:03:05
Just remember, we tend to use the passive voice for when we want to concentrate on the action rather than the person or object carrying out the action.
00:03:14
Okay?
