Using comparative and superlative structures to tell a story.

Descargar la transcripción

Even though comparisons are obvious, we need to know how to make them. 00:00:00
In our everyday life, we are making decisions all the time. 00:00:05
When we go shopping, we need to compare items. 00:00:10
When we choose our friends, we need to compare people. 00:00:14
When we choose our employees, we need to compare candidates. 00:00:18
We always need to decide which path to follow, 00:00:22
analyze the situations, and compare the different options, if there are any. 00:00:26
If you are comparing two items, you will use a comparative form. 00:00:33
If you are describing one out of many, you will use a superlative form. 00:00:38
By the end of this lesson, you should be able to 00:00:43
identify the comparative and the superlative form of adjectives, 00:00:47
distinguish between both forms, 00:00:53
and use them to make comparisons. 00:00:56
Now watch the images and listen to their story. 00:01:00
To his surprise, she said yes. 00:01:22
Although she didn't tell him, Sarah thought Mike wasn't as attractive as Amy's boyfriend, 00:01:25
but he was still more handsome than the rest, and he was definitely the funniest guy in class. 00:01:30
They went out together for almost a year, and everybody thought they made the perfect couple. 00:01:36
One of the prettiest girls with one of the most interesting guys. 00:01:42
However, Mike had the feeling something was wrong. 00:01:46
Sarah was always comparing herself to others. 00:01:50
The day he told her she looked beautiful in her new dress, she said, 00:01:53
Really? Don't you think Amy's dress is more elegant than mine? 00:01:57
When she opened the birthday present that Mike bought for her, she said, 00:02:01
Oh, it's a beautiful bracelet, Mike, but the one Sammy bought for Amy was even prettier. 00:02:05
By the time Mike couldn't take it anymore was the day he took her to one of the most popular restaurants in town. 00:02:10
He had been saving up for months to impress her, and when they had to order the food, she said, 00:02:17
I don't want to eat anything because Amy is thinner than me, and I don't want to get as fat as my mom. 00:02:22
She also added, 00:02:28
Mike, you should be more careful with what you eat, too, because Sammy is fitter than you. 00:02:30
He eats much healthier food. 00:02:35
That was it. Mike broke up with Sarah that same evening. 00:02:37
Sarah was more confused than ever. 00:02:41
Mike told her that, although she had everything, she wasn't as happy as her friends because 00:02:44
she always wanted what other people had. 00:02:52
Maybe if she had less than the others, she would realize 00:02:57
that she was one of the luckiest girls he had ever met, and she would start being happy. 00:03:01
You should have valued what you had, because now it's gone. 00:03:07
Now let's see if he understood. 00:03:12
Here are two examples you can use. 00:03:42
When you find multiple syllables, you have to add more before the adjective. 00:03:45
When the ending is a consonant plus Y, change the Y to an I and add ER. 00:03:49
Heavier and more modern are two adjectives you can use. 00:03:54
Both have two syllables, but they form in a different way. 00:03:58
You can use these rules. 00:04:02
Form the superlative form, too, with the only difference, you have to use EST instead of ER. 00:04:05
You can use these rules to form the superlative form, too. 00:04:11
The only difference, you have to use MOST instead of MORE. 00:04:15
Another part of this song goes for the irregular forms. 00:04:20
There's no rule to learn them, you can just learn them by heart. 00:04:24
The comparative form of good is better. 00:04:28
The comparative form of far is further. 00:04:31
Remember, it's easy. 00:04:33
You only have to do what I say. 00:04:35
When you want to use a comparative form. 00:04:38
When you want to use a superlative form. 00:04:40
Remember, it's easy. 00:04:43
You only have to do what I say. 00:04:45
