Hello, guys. Today in our flipped classroom session, we're going to be learning about reported speech. 00:00:00
Now, when I talk about reported speech, it's what I use to report another person's comments. 00:00:07
Because we report their words at a later time, we change their verb tense and other words, such as time expressions and pronouns. 00:00:15
Now, we're going to start to see examples of different verb tenses. 00:00:24
So, let's start to see what will happen with the present simple. 00:00:28
The sentence, I often borrow my sister's clothes, will be reported as Linda said she often borrowed her sister's clothes. 00:00:34
We can see the present simple has changed to past simple. 00:00:45
You're going to see the verbs in bold. 00:00:50
Are you going to see any of the words that need changing highlighted? 00:00:53
sorry underlined now let's carry on so when I talk about and I say my friends are looking at clothes 00:00:58
now these will be reported as he said that his friends were looking at clothes then the change 00:01:06
here is from present continuous to past continuous and my parents have bought clothes here 00:01:14
is reported as Louise said that her parents have bought clothes that the present perfect then 00:01:22
changes to past perfect and my following example says these shops opened at 9 a.m reported as 00:01:30
she said those shops had opened at 9 a.m the past simple changes to past perfect 00:01:41
and next one is to do a feature so when i have a sentence like janet will love this cotton top 00:01:50
is reported as paul said that janet would love that cotton top the will then changes to wood 00:01:59
an example with con we say we can order it tomorrow and i can report it as claire told 00:02:08
on that they could order it the following day so my car changes to could on the last one when I say 00:02:17
you must wear a matching top I report it as Harry told John that he had to wear a matching top 00:02:26
now this is all about the verbs however I want to give you a tip you might have noticed there 00:02:36
two verbs I've been using say and tell now when I use say it is without an object so for example I 00:02:43
say Paul said that Jane would love the top if I do use tell it's always followed by an object 00:02:53
as in the second example so Paul told me that Jane will love the top what I can't say is what 00:03:02
comes here i can't be saying paul sent me that jane would love the top now it is time to get 00:03:10
your worksheet ready and start practicing i'm going to give you a well clear set here and i 00:03:18
want you to choose a correct option let me just read i love fashion and i'm and shopping is my 00:03:27
hobby. I'm starting my own YouTube channel about fashion. Hopefully it will be a bit 00:03:35
head. Now it's probably time to pause the video and make the correct choice for each 00:03:42
of the options given. I'll see you in a second and we'll carry on. It's the time now to look 00:03:49
at time phrases. You can see here how everything underlined is what it will be said in direct 00:03:58
speech and this is next to how will we report it so if I say now I will report it and then 00:04:06
it might be that you need a few seconds to read all the different options before we carry on 00:04:16
practicing. As I mentioned earlier there are other words that change and these include pronouns so 00:04:24
for example if i speak in the first person this will be reported as he or she it could be any 00:04:32
other pronouns like these or are these or here if i refer to a place now having seen this let's go 00:04:39
and do our next activity so what i want you to do here is you have some of the words that you 00:04:48
will have to fill in the correct gap it might be that this will take you two or three minutes i 00:04:55
want you to stop the video have a look at it and answer your questions on the worksheet 00:05:03
now this following activity it is a challenge so i know that some of you will do it for extra points 00:05:08
but some other people might attempt to do an incomplete part of the sentence that will still 00:05:18
be okay let me show you the sentences here now i want you to be writing these sentences in reported 00:05:26
speech it is time again to stop that video have a look at the sentence and see how many of them 00:05:36
you can do there are a total of seven sentences each of them in one of the tenses we have been 00:05:44
studied today now when you do all the activities please bring them to the lesson tomorrow and we'll 00:05:53
be checking your answers good luck in the meantime thank you very much for watching 00:05:59
and if you have any other extra questions please don't forget to make a note 00:06:07
