Well friends, we all have skin and it serves multiple purposes.
00:00:01
Like, it is an essential barrier or our first line of protection against the outside environment.
00:00:06
It is a crucial part of one of our five senses.
00:00:14
It absorbs sunlight for Vitamin D and heat and controls our internal temperature..
00:00:18
..and permits the sensations of touch, heat and cold.
00:00:25
But, how does it work?
00:00:30
Well, your skin is made up of three layers.
00:00:33
The epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.
00:00:37
Let's start with the first layer known as epidermis.
00:00:41
The epidermis is the outer layer of skin and is made up mainly of skin cells.
00:00:45
The cells on the very outer layer of the epidermis are constantly dying..
00:00:52
..and getting replaced by new cells every four weeks.
00:00:57
As the new cells are formed, the older ones are pushed up.
00:01:02
Once they reach the surface area, they provide a waterproof barrier..
00:01:07
..from the invading microbes and other external forces.
00:01:11
The epidermis also contains melanin that sets the tone of your skin.
00:01:16
More the melanin, the darker the skin.
00:01:23
skin melanin also helps to protect from harmful sun rays but it has its limits
00:01:25
and that's why we need some sunscreen now let's go to the second layer known
00:01:32
as the dermis the dermis contains tough connective tissue hair follicles sweat
00:01:39
glands and nerve endings through which the skin sends the messages to the brain
00:01:46
about all the things you touch then the brain and the nervous system decides how
00:01:52
to respond towards it for example if you touch something too hot your nervous
00:01:59
system will tell your brain to move away from it the dermis also contains the
00:02:05
sweat glands where the sweat is generated and poured out all the way
00:02:12
through the epidermis where the sweat comes out of the holes called pores that
00:02:17
helps to regulate your body's temperature and the last part of your
00:02:23
skin layer is called the hypodermis also known as subcutaneous tissue and is made
00:02:29
up of fat and connective tissue the hypodermis is primary function is to
00:02:37
store fat the body needs some level of fat to cushion and protect your bones
00:02:43
and organs also it helps us to keep our body nice and warm
