You're cruising the Pacific in your luxury yacht when you come across a deserted island.
00:00:00
Turns out, it's not so deserted after all.
00:00:04
There's a bunch of islanders arguing about who owns all the coconuts.
00:00:07
You approach them and ask who's in charge.
00:00:11
No one, they say.
00:00:13
You ask them if they have a government or any laws.
00:00:15
One of them asks, what are those?
00:00:17
Well, you say, a government organizes people and makes laws or rules to protect their property and rights.
00:00:19
That means you won't have to fight over the coconuts anymore.
00:00:26
You guys want to start one?
00:00:29
The islanders nod.
00:00:30
There are lots of different types, you say.
00:00:32
First, you have to decide who gets to have the decision-making power.
00:00:34
One type is a democracy.
00:00:38
That's when you give everyone decision-making power.
00:00:40
A democracy can either be direct or indirect.
00:00:42
In a direct democracy, everyone gets a vote on every major decision.
00:00:46
It works best for small groups like the one here on this island, but only if you guys
00:00:51
can agree to follow the decision with the most votes.
00:00:55
If you keep arguing like this, all your coconuts will rot.
00:00:58
There's also an indirect democracy, also called a representative democracy, or simply, a republic.
00:01:02
We have this type of government where I come from, the United States.
00:01:09
We elect a few individuals to represent us as groups.
00:01:13
We trust those people to make decisions in our best interests.
00:01:16
If they don't, we can elect new representatives.
00:01:19
An autocracy is when one person runs the government, making all the decisions.
00:01:22
A monarchy is a type of autocracy run by a queen or a king.
00:01:27
Monarchs rule for life and are hereditary, meaning each new queen or king is a family
00:01:32
member of the previous monarch, usually a son or daughter.
00:01:36
In an absolute monarchy, there's a single ruler with no limits on power.
00:01:40
In a constitutional monarchy, the monarch is limited by a constitution and laws.
00:01:44
A dictatorship is also an autocracy.
00:01:49
A dictator rules a nation by force, making all government decisions, sometimes with the
00:01:52
the help of advisors. Dictators want power for life. They like to take all the coconuts
00:01:57
for themselves, if you know what I mean.
00:02:02
But, uh, my dear young man, politics aren't necessary.
00:02:31
Politics are rules imposed upon the people.
00:02:35
In this country, rules are not imposed.
00:02:37
They are the wish of all free citizens.
00:02:40
Travel around a bit. Then you'll see how free they are.
