Hi, today we are going to talk about the Jacobin Convention, Directory and Consulate. 00:00:01
First of all, we are going to explain you what are the Jacobins. 00:00:08
The Jacobins are a political group of the French Revolution. 00:00:13
They were formed in 1789 by the Breton deputies to the States General. 00:00:16
The club's name comes from the Monastery of the Jacobins, place where they met. 00:00:22
Their goal was to concern their activity and to guarantee the support for the group from other people foreign to the assembly. 00:00:28
The leader of this club was called Maximilien Robespierre. 00:00:37
He was one of the principal figures of the French Revolution. 00:00:42
At the end of 1793, he arrived to control the Committee of Public Safety, 00:00:46
which at that time was the principal organ of the revolutionary government during the Ring of Terror. 00:00:52
But in 1794 he was beaten and executed in the Thermidorian Reaction. 00:00:59
The Terror was the period of the French Revolution from September the 5th in 1793 to July the 27th in 1794. 00:01:05
The revolutionary government decided to infuse terror on citizens, and the ones that opposed to the revolution were killed in Paris. 00:01:17
In the year 1793, a new constitution was adopted and established universal manhood suffrage, which means that common men were able to vote. 00:01:27
Do you remember this guy from before? Well, he created the law of maximums that fixed the maximum prices for basic food to make sure people could afford them. 00:01:37
During this period, a popular revolutionary army was formed, along with some measures intended to contribute to the war that France was fighting against Austria, Prussia, Great Britain and Spain. 00:01:46
