Like other young women in her community, Fatuma's day begins with housework.
00:00:04
But Fatuma is no ordinary girl.
00:00:10
She is the first from her village to reach the final year of secondary school.
00:00:13
Studying for her final exams, Fatuma also hopes to be the first girl to graduate from
00:00:19
this school in Tijura.
00:00:23
A startling achievement in Djibouti where only one in five girls enrolls in secondary
00:00:26
school and only 33% of all children attend primary school.
00:00:31
Fatuma's village is in one of the poorest regions, with even lower rates of schooling.
00:00:37
But programmes like UNICEF's School Bags support government efforts to boost numbers by providing
00:00:43
the poorest pupils like Fatuma with books and supplies.
00:00:48
Education is very important to me, for getting a job and because it is the only way to become
00:00:52
someone in society.
00:01:04
A person who can't read is very different to someone with an education, aren't they?
00:01:07
Therefore, one must be educated with good qualification in order to go far and get a
00:01:12
good job.
00:01:18
Fatuma's father died in conflict 16 years ago.
00:01:25
As the oldest child, she works hard alongside her mother to care for six siblings at home.
00:01:29
Her mother's support and refusal to let Fatuma marry has been vital in keeping Fatuma in
00:01:35
school.
00:01:40
Most girls here are married young and miss out on the chance to help their families begin
00:01:42
the climb out of poverty.
00:01:46
I hope that I will succeed this year and I also hope to have the opportunity to continue
00:01:54
my studies for two years so I can get a higher degree and get a job to help my family which
00:01:59
needs me.
00:02:05
Fatuma's dream is to become a teacher, to inspire and help other girls in her village
00:02:10
fight for their rights and follow the path she is blazing before them.
