Hi guys, today we're going to be talking about the present perfect. 00:00:00
We use the present perfect to talk about unfinished actions that started in the past and continue into the present. 00:00:15
For example, I have lived in Madrid for four years. 00:00:26
This is something that started four years ago, but it's still happening now in the present. 00:00:33
So we use the present perfect. 00:00:40
The next one says, we use the present perfect to talk about our experiences in a way that doesn't say when it happened. 00:00:43
For example, she has never been to Paris. 00:00:57
So, in this example, we're talking about an experience that some girl has had in the past, but we don't know when exactly it happened. 00:01:03
So, we use the present perfect. 00:01:15
Now, how do we form the present perfect? 00:01:20
Well, first we start with our subject. 00:01:24
I, you, they, we, she, he, and it. 00:01:27
and then to form the present perfect we have to add have or has so for the subjects i you they 00:01:33
and we we add have and then we add the past participle and if you look over here we have a 00:01:45
small chart of regular verbs the past simple and then the past participle to help you 00:01:54
so for example I plus have and then we can choose a verb here I have lost my passport for example 00:02:02
but now if we look at she he and it we use has instead of have so I could say she has gone 00:02:15
to Paris, for example. So let's look at these three examples here. The first one says she has 00:02:27
eaten her cookie. Now we know that we're using the present perfect because we have the subject 00:02:37
plus has, and we use has because it's she, he, or it, and then eaten, which is the past participle 00:02:45
of eat and we don't know when she ate her cookie we just know that she ate it which is why we use 00:02:55
the present perfect. The next example says we have seen that movie. Here we have our present perfect 00:03:02
have seen and we use have because the subject is we and if it's we we use have and then the past 00:03:13
participle is seen which is the past participle of to see. And the last example says it has been 00:03:22
raining for three days. So our subject here is it and because it's it we use has and then been 00:03:34
is the past participle of the verb to be. 00:03:45
So, it has been raining for three days. 00:03:50
This is something that started three days ago in the past, 00:03:55
but it's still happening. 00:04:00
So, that's why we use the present perfect. 00:04:02
