Materials 00:00:01
Origin of materials 00:00:12
Natural origin 00:00:15
They come directly from nature. 00:00:18
For example, wool, wood, cotton, gold, etc. 00:00:22
Artificial origin 00:00:28
They are made from natural materials. 00:00:31
For example, paper, glass, plastic or steel. 00:00:35
Properties of materials. 00:00:41
Each material has its own characteristics and properties. 00:00:45
We can perceive some properties through our senses. 00:00:51
For example, the smell, the texture, the taste or the color. 00:00:57
To perceive other properties we have to experiment. 00:01:03
Hardness. It is the resistance to scratching. Materials can be hard or soft. 00:01:08
For example, diamonds and bronze are the hardest ones. 00:01:15
Conductivity. It is the material's ability to transfer electricity or heat. 00:01:21
A material can be conductive. It lets electricity or heat pass on, for example, iron. 00:01:28
Non-conductive. It does not let electricity or heat pass on, for example, plastic. 00:01:39
Thermal insulation. 00:01:48
The material reduces the transfer of heat, for example, glass. 00:01:51
Acoustic insulation. It is the material's ability to let sound pass through. 00:01:58
We use these materials to reduce noise, for example in houses. 00:02:06
Waterproof. These materials do not let water go through. For example, rubber or plastic. 00:02:12
Light transmission. It is the property of allowing light to go through. 00:02:21
Materials can be transparent. It lets the 100% of light go through and you can see what is on the other side. For example, glass. 00:02:28
Translucent. It lets part of the light pass through but you cannot perfectly see the other side. For example, plastic. 00:02:40
Opaque. It does not let fly, throw and you cannot see this other side. For example, stone. 00:02:51
Flexibility. It is the capacity of a material to be folded or bent. 00:03:03
Materials can be flexible. It can be easily folded. For example, paper. 00:03:09
Rigid. It cannot be folded or bent. For example, wood. 00:03:16
Elasticity. It is the material's capacity to be deformed and to recover its original form. 00:03:24
Materials can be elastic. It can be deformed and recover its original form easily. For example, rubber. 00:03:31
Non-elastic. It cannot be deformed, for example, a stone. 00:03:43
Magnetism. It is the property of attraction between magnets and metal. 00:03:49
Materials can be magnetic. They attract each other easily, for example, metal. 00:03:56
Non-magnetic. They do not attract each other, for example, wood. 00:04:02
