Unit 5B
Hello, we're going to work on speaking and today we're going to concentrate on given opinions
00:00:00
and agreeing and disagreeing. This is something that we've done before but we're going to review
00:00:08
a little bit and expand on it. So if you please go to your book and open it on page 83, you have
00:00:16
section number six speaking and there you have some statements you can agree
00:00:25
or disagree for example you can only have two or three close friends going on
00:00:35
a holiday with friends can end the friendship or for example it's
00:00:42
impossible to stay good friends with an ex-partner. And in your book they
00:00:48
ask you to choose a topic and decide whether you agree, disagree or both agree
00:00:55
and disagree or strongly disagree. And you're supposed to give reasons and
00:01:05
examples right and to present all this information they give you this linkers
00:01:12
now when presenting a topic I'm going to talk about when given reasons I think
00:01:20
the main reason or the most important reason is or I believe it is important
00:01:29
or it's impossible to be to stay friends with your ex-partners because you always
00:01:37
remember the bad things that happened or another reason is that when you want to
00:01:44
do that or given examples for example I have a friend who I've known since I was
00:01:52
five years old and he couldn't stand his mother-in-law or for instance okay now
00:01:58
this is similar or you can check all this linkers in the speaking section okay all right let me
00:02:07
check okay I found it out on the speaking section yes if you check this speaking you have oral
00:02:25
interaction markers okay this is something we went through in class and
00:02:37
there you have this is a help no when you persuade or you can't sit have a
00:02:44
point okay that may be true but or when you build up an argument state by state
00:02:56
no for example or for start first of all and what's more and don't forget that
00:03:05
okay so here you have you have this in your aula virtual okay to add more
00:03:13
linkers to the task which is presenting an opinion and given reasons given
00:03:25
examples given agreeing and disagreeing okay so we're going to start by
00:03:34
expressing opinions there you are discussions are more interesting when
00:03:44
people have different opinions on the subject and here in your book you have
00:03:52
some of the statements that you're going to use okay you may ask for people's
00:03:57
opinions and ask questions that encourage, que demandan, ¿no? a response. So, what do you think
00:04:02
about cosmetic surgery? Where do you stand on giving money to beggars? Where do you stand on
00:04:12
giving? Where do you stand on? ¿Cuál es tu opinión? When you give your opinions, you may
00:04:21
use neutral statements like in my view, I think, I feel, I reckon, I guess, it's acceptable,
00:04:29
acceptable. And sometimes you give a strong opinion, no? I really believe, okay? And I want
00:04:40
you to listen to this now. Track 69. One. Do you know, I spent about two hours yesterday just
00:04:49
opening and answering my emails. There were about 50 in my inbox since 6pm. I think emails have made
00:05:03
life more difficult and not easier at all. What do you reckon? I guess you're right. Emailing does
00:05:10
seem to have taken over our lives. Some people say they only check email once or twice a day.
00:05:17
If you ask me, it's a crazy idea. I mean, what if it's something really urgent?
00:05:23
The way I see it, that's exactly why you should phone someone, to get their attention immediately.
00:05:30
If you knew your email wouldn't be read for several hours, you wouldn't send it. You'd phone, surely.
00:05:35
Yes, and in my view, that's exactly what we should start doing, using the phone again.
00:05:40
But then we'd all be complaining about endless phone calls during our working day.
00:05:47
Okay, now that you have listened, stop the video and take note of all the linkers and sentences they've used to express their opinions.
00:05:52
Okay, here's the tape script. There you have it.
00:06:11
I think... I think emails have made life more difficult. What do you reckon?
00:06:22
I guess you're right. If you ask me, it's a crazy idea. The way I see it, in my view…
00:06:29
OK, up to here. Now you're going to listen to another conversation.
00:06:41
What do you think about this new suggestion that criminals should meet and apologise to their victims?
00:06:51
I strongly believe it could be helpful to both people in some cases,
00:06:58
but not when the crimes are serious.
00:07:04
Personally, I wouldn't want to meet someone who really hurt me in some way.
00:07:06
What's your attitude to people working in the community, then, instead of going to prison?
00:07:12
Are you in favour of having criminals clean the streets outside your house where children are playing?
00:07:17
Because as far as I'm concerned, criminals should be kept away from society
00:07:23
not allowed into it. I really think it depends on the crime. I know driving while drunk is a crime,
00:07:27
but to my mind, someone who is guilty of that crime wouldn't be a danger working as a street
00:07:36
cleaner. OK, so now stop the video and check the expressions. Right, there you have.
00:07:42
what do you think about? I strongly believe, personally. What's your attitude to? You see,
00:08:01
it's not only what do you think, but what's your attitude? Where do you stand on?
00:08:13
Another one, as far as I'm concerned, I really think, but to my mind, okay? So just to finish
00:08:19
this. Look at these sentences and complete them with these words in the box. And we're
00:08:29
going to stop here and then we'll do more exercises.
