Hello, boys and girls. Today we are going to talk about was and were in your pupil's book, page 73. 00:00:00
So, what's the meaning of was and were? 00:00:08
Well, these are words that we use when we talk about the past, okay? 00:00:10
We use was and were or wasn't and weren't. 00:00:15
Something important to remember is that was and were are for affirmative sentences 00:00:20
and wasn't and weren't are both for negative sentences. 00:00:25
All right, when do we use was and were? 00:00:31
Well, if we're talking in the present, for example, right now or today, we would say I am or I'm at the beach. 00:00:35
But if we're talking about the past, for example, yesterday, last week, last night, we can't say I am at the beach. 00:00:45
We have to say I was at the beach last week. 00:00:53
In the present, we say she is at the cinema, but in the past, we have to say she was at the cinema last night. 00:00:58
In the present, we say they are at home, but in the past, we have to say they were at home yesterday, for example. 00:01:07
How can I make a sentence with was or were? 00:01:17
Well, if I start my sentence with I, he or she, then I know I have to use was or wasn't. 00:01:20
So, my sentence could be, for example, he was at home yesterday. 00:01:27
But, if I start my sentence with you, we, or they, then I know I have to use were or weren't. 00:01:36
So, an example sentence could be, they weren't at the cinema last Wednesday. 00:01:44
Okay. 00:01:52
So, let's practice. 00:01:53
Here at the top, you can see the table to help you. 00:01:55
The first sentence has got a tick, which means it's affirmative. 00:01:59
It says, I ____ at the beach yesterday afternoon. 00:02:04
So, we look at the table for I, and the affirmative is was. 00:02:08
So, I was at the beach yesterday afternoon. Good. 00:02:13
The second sentence has got a cross, which means it's negative. 00:02:17
So they at school last week. They negative. They weren't at school last week. Good. Next. This one 00:02:21
is affirmative. She at home last night. So she was. Excellent. Next. This one has a cross. It's 00:02:32
negative. My dad at a museum last weekend. It has to be wasn't. Remember my dad is the same as if 00:02:43
you say he, he wasn't. Next, it's got a tick so it's affirmative. You at the swimming pool last 00:02:53
Friday. You were excellent. Bye-bye. 00:03:01
