European consumers aren’t full aware of the advantages to be gained by new and efficient electric appliances. In view of the up-coming Season shopping, when buying new appliances, it is essential for the consumer to be able to make a well-informed choice. The industry, pushed by the European Commission, has invested in products able to provide a high performance while reducing the environmental impact. The video also shows how to choose performing domestic appliances that can offer considerable savings on electricity bills. We will also see representatives from European domestic appliance makers speak in the video about the industry’s efforts in putting in the market more energy efficient products. Finally, the video shows also how domestic behaviours, such as turning the lights off on time or turning off the coffee machine after you have made the coffee contribute as well to the energy saving.
It's a common enough sight and one that can be witnessed every day in millions of homes
00:00:00
across the European Union. But what many people don't realise is that domestic appliances
00:00:27
like washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, televisions and DVD players consume almost
00:00:32
as much electricity every year as all of the EU's factories, offices and industrial plants
00:00:38
put together. In a European Union that now has over 450 million inhabitants, that adds
00:00:43
up to an awful lot of power. It's the equivalent of around two thirds of a tonne of crude oil
00:00:51
per person per year. As energy use is responsible for nearly 80% of the EU's greenhouse gas
00:00:56
emissions, that's a reality we should all be taking very seriously indeed. Particularly
00:01:04
as an awful lot of the energy consumed in Europe today is quite simply wasted. Around
00:01:09
20% according to the European Commission. And households have a key role to play in
00:01:15
tackling the problem. If you don't use energy efficient appliances or don't use energy efficient
00:01:20
bulbs, you are wasting your money. And just for nothing. And it really should be very
00:01:26
painful. It's like taking your euros, notes and just putting it on fire. So why do this?
00:01:31
It's completely unnecessary because nobody is benefiting. Resources are limited. Whatever
00:01:38
we do now when we waste resources, we deprive these resources for our kids or grandchildren.
