Hello, this is Kori, and today we are going to continue talking about Spain in the Middle Ages. 00:00:00
We are going to be talking about Al-Andalus. 00:00:12
In the year 711, the Muslims defeated the Visigoths at the Battle of Guadalete. 00:00:22
The Muslims already dominated North Africa. Within seven years the Muslims had occupied 00:00:32
almost all of the Iberian Peninsula. This means they controlled almost all of the Iberian Peninsula 00:00:43
and North Africa. Al-Andalus became part of the powerful Islamic empire. This was a strong empire. 00:00:53
Cordoba became the capital of Al-Andalus. In the year 756, Al-Andalus became an independent 00:01:10
emirate. It became independent. Then in the 10th century, in the year 929, 00:01:27
Amir Abd al-Rahman III proclaimed himself Caliph of Cordoba. So in the year 929, 00:01:45
Amir Abdurrahman III said he was the leader of Cordoba. This made Cordoba a 00:01:57
caliphate. Al-Andalus was one of the main centers for trade and culture in the 00:02:06
Mediterranean. This means Al-Andalus was a really important place for trade, 00:02:19
exchanging goods, and for culture. After the fall of the Caliphate in the 11th 00:02:28
century, the year 1031, Al-Andalus broke up into several Taifa kingdoms. So when 00:02:39
the Caliphate fell, it broke apart. Al-Andalus broke up into several Taifa 00:02:53
kingdoms. Now if we look at our picture on the right, you can see this red line 00:03:05
shows the Christian-Muslim frontier. These red arrows show the campaigns of 00:03:15
