1902, Alfonso XIII, son of Alfonso XII, was proclaimed king. 00:00:04
During his reign, social and political conflicts in Spain happened. 00:00:12
Strikes organized by labor unions took place due to the poor work. 00:00:26
The nationalism in Catalonia, Galicia and País Vasco remained more out of tune. 00:00:33
And the war in Morocco where many Spanish soldiers died and Spain lost territories in North Africa. 00:00:55
There were many conflicts between workers and employers. 00:01:29
Employers hired mercenaries to take down the leaders of the workers. 00:01:32
And the workers attacked the nobility and the bourgeois. 00:01:36
King Alfonso XIII was shot with a bomb. 00:01:41
This period is now known as Epoca del Pistolerismo. 00:01:44
Taking advantage of the social and political conflict, the General Primo de Rivera led a coup in 1923. 00:01:47
In a coup, a person or a group takes control of the government by force. 00:01:59
Primo de Rivera established a military dictatorship. 00:02:09
He abolished the Constitution. 00:02:15
He banned all political parties. 00:02:19
He also banned all the labor unions, limited the freedom of citizens. 00:02:21

The King Alfonso XIII supported Primo de Rivera, but he was not part of the global movement. 00:02:32
Primo de Rivera won the war with Morocco and many roads, railways and other public works were built under his rule. 00:02:38

In 1930, Primo de Rivera lost the support from the king. 00:02:56
