You are watching UNICEF Television. 00:00:00
In the middle of literally nowhere, an hour's walk from a nearby road, 00:00:03
there is a primary school that is setting the standard 00:00:07
for what a child-friendly school in Madagascar should be all about. 00:00:10
In five years, enrollment at Ambuchunibe School has gone up from 155 to 207. 00:00:15
Completion has almost doubled, and dropouts have been reduced by 300%. 00:00:23
The reason for this success? A contract signed between parents, teachers, 00:00:28
school administrators, local community members, and students 00:00:34
to keep children in a quality school. 00:00:38
Since this contract was signed, parents have renovated the school building, 00:00:42
opened up a canteen, and will soon be constructing a library and a football field. 00:00:46
Even children help through a Big Brother, Big Sister program. 00:00:52
Every morning, Big Brothers and Big Sisters pick up and guide their younger siblings 00:00:57
to traverse three to five kilometers to ensure that no child is left out. 00:01:01
UNICEF has helped make this dream possible by financing and training teachers 00:01:07
to help schools put in place the contracts, as well as producing an implementation guide, 00:01:12
carrying out frequent field visits, and providing material support, 00:01:17
particularly for the development of learning materials. 00:01:22
The government of Madagascar wants to promote this type of contract program 00:01:31
in all 22 regions of the country. 00:01:36
Hoping, of course, for the same results, a school full of healthy, happy children. 00:01:42
Ms. Basheg, reporting for UNICEF Television, Unite for Children. 00:01:48
