00:01:33
Today, we're learning about Carnival, something really exciting, right?
00:01:37
Right, so get comfortable and open your imagination to a wonderful world.
00:01:40
So, what is Carnival?
00:01:57
Well, Carnival is a very old tradition that many countries celebrate.
00:01:59
A long time ago, people started celebrating Carnival before Quaresma, Lent in English,
00:02:03
which is a special time before Easter for Christians.
00:02:09
During Carnival, people eat lots of delicious food, wear fun costumes, and have big parties.
00:02:12
Today, some of the most famous Carnival celebrations happen in Brazil, Italy, New Orleans in the U.S.,
00:02:17
and, of course, in Tenerife, Spain.
00:02:24
Richard, did you know that the word carnival comes from Latin?
00:02:26
It means goodbye to meat, because in the past, people would stop eating meat during
00:02:31
Quaresma.
00:02:37
Interesting.
00:02:38
Yeah.
00:02:39
Do you know any other fun facts?
00:02:39
Yes.
00:02:42
In Venice, Italy, people wear beautiful masks with feathers and gold.
00:02:43
There is a competition every year for the most beautiful mask.
00:02:48
And when the Venice Carnival was biggest in the 1500s, the carnival started in October.
00:02:52
What about Brazil? Can you tell me anything about the carnival there?
00:02:59
Rio de Janeiro has the largest carnival in the world.
00:03:03
It lasts almost a whole week and there are over 6 million people celebrating.
00:03:07
The Brazilian Carnival is a mix of European, Native American and African cultures.
00:03:13
They have great parades with samba music for the people to watch and dance together
00:03:19
They dress up in elaborate costumes and masks to show their dancing skills
00:03:27
Wow, sounds exciting, I can't wait to listen to some samba music
00:03:34
The city of Rio is twinned with Santa Cruz de Tenerife here in Spain.
00:03:51
This is because Santa Cruz has the second most popular celebration in the world.
00:04:06
Dave set record twice for the biggest concert in a outdoor plaza.
00:04:12
First Celia Cruz in 1987.
00:04:17
And again in 2019 with Juan Luis Guerra.
00:04:23
Me sube la vilirrubina, cuando te miro y no me miras, y no lo quita la pirina, es un amor que contamina.
00:04:27
They also had a competition to elect the Queen of Carnival.
00:04:40
Since 1987, every year has had a different theme.
00:04:45
The first theme was Rome.
00:04:49
This year's theme is Secret of Africa.
00:04:53
Another interesting fact is that during the Franco regime,
00:04:57
Carnival was banned to stop people from showing joy in public.
00:05:02
Luckily, Carnival returned to Tenerife in 1961 and has been a great party ever since.
00:05:06
That's a lot of cool information. Now I have to visit Tenerife. Sounds like a paradise.
00:05:16
and there's one more carnival celebration to talk about in new orleans they celebrate mardi gras
00:05:22
yes mardi gras is a french word it means fat tuesday so it is celebrated the tuesday before
00:05:38
as Wednesday. El miércoles de ceniza. They also have the parade with masks and costumes for the
00:05:50
whole week before as Wednesday. On the day of Mardi Gras, the parades start at eight in the
00:06:01
morning, and the parties last until past midnight.
00:06:11
One of the most famous parts of Merdigra are the bead necklaces and coins, which people
00:06:17
on the parade float through to the crowd's watching.
00:06:25
if you could which carnival would you like to visit i like i prefer visit the carnival of
00:06:30

00:06:46
