Introduction to bilingual school programme in Comunidad de Madrid.

Descargar la transcripción

During the course of the academic year 2004-2005, 26 state primary schools in the Comunidad 00:00:00
de Madrid embarked upon a bilingual Spanish-English program. At the beginning of 2005-2006, 54 00:00:26
new schools were incorporated into the same program, and during 2006-2007, another 42 00:00:35
schools will follow suit. This year, we'll see the fulfillment of the implantation program 00:00:42
of 122 state schools in the area, all of which will impart at least one-third of their 00:00:48
subject matter in English. 00:00:58
Can you tell everyone? 00:01:01
Today is Friday. 00:01:03
And tomorrow will be? 00:01:05
And tomorrow will be Friday. 00:01:09
Good. 00:01:12
This program is not only unique to Spain, but also to a great many European countries. 00:01:14
Amongst their objectives, these bilingual schools propose to help their pupils throughout their 00:01:23
primary education develop an adequate command of both spoken and written English and Spanish. 00:01:28
Pupils should not only be able to recognize the different possible expressive styles in 00:01:40
both languages, but also should acquire enough communicative competence in English to be 00:01:44
able to interact naturally in everyday situations. 00:01:49
Now, Nerea, what questions did you ask Alejandro to know the animal, to guess the animal? 00:01:57
Is it a big animal? 00:02:03
Is it a big animal, Alejandro? 00:02:05
Yes. 00:02:07
So, animal? 00:02:09
Yes. 00:02:11
The bilingual schools of the Comunidad de Madrid are in the process of developing a quality 00:02:13
bilingual curricula, the results of which can be evaluated and homologized throughout 00:02:18
the European community. 00:02:23
From kindergarten onwards, the pupils begin to slowly acquire an excellent grounding in 00:02:27
both the English and Spanish languages. 00:02:32
The pupils of these centers receive daily tuition in English, Spanish and Mathematics. 00:02:36
Furthermore, they have additional conversation practice with native language assistants and 00:02:41
are also able to carry out interchanges with children from their British twinned school. 00:02:47
At the end of the first cycle, the pupils should be able to hold a simple conversation 00:02:53
in English. 00:02:57
They will be introduced to the skills of reading and writing, both of which will be reinforced 00:02:59
during the second cycle. 00:03:04
Over the last two years of their primary education, the pupils will develop and perfect all of 00:03:07
the communicative competences. 00:03:12
The content of those courses taught in English throughout the primary education period will 00:03:15
enable the pupils to obtain certificates recognized at a European level. 00:03:20
I'm not eight years old. 00:03:25
I'm eight years old, good. 00:03:27
And when is your birthday? 00:03:29
The 7th of January. 00:03:32
7th of January, ok. 00:03:34
And how old are you, Ruben? 00:03:36
I'm eight years old. 00:03:38
Very good. 00:03:39
And when is your birthday? 00:03:40
24th of February. 00:03:42
24th of February, good. 00:03:43
The Comunidad de Madrid's bilingual school program is an ambitious one in which the Consejería 00:03:47
de Educación is determined to succeed. 00:03:52
However, it recognizes that such successes can only be achieved through the cooperation, 00:03:55
dedication and effort of teachers, parents and pupils alike. 00:04:01
While parents may sometimes have difficulty in helping their children with homework assignments, 00:04:15
monitoring their daily progress or maintaining contact with teachers, such obligations are 00:04:20
undoubtedly vital if the students are to benefit fully from a bilingual education. 00:04:25
