The tongue shapes the food into a ball called a bolus. 00:00:28
When we swallow, the bolus passes into the esophagus, 00:00:35
which is a stretchy tube that links the back of the throat with the stomach. 00:00:39
There is a special flat part at the back of the tongue called the epiglottis, 00:00:47
which prevents food from going down the windpipe into the lungs. 00:00:52
The muscles in the wall of the esophagus slowly squeeze the food down to the stomach. 00:00:57
The role of the stomach is to break down food. 00:01:05
The stomach does this by using its strong muscular walls and excreting gastric juices, 00:01:12
which mix with the bolus and kill dangerous bacteria. 00:01:21
Once the food is dissolved into a liquid, it passes into the small intestine. 00:01:27
Here, it mixes with bile, which is produced by the liver, and pancreas juices, which are produced by the pancreas. 00:01:38
The food mixture is broken down into proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fats. 00:01:49
These nutrients pass through the small intestine and are absorbed into the blood. 00:01:55
